I can't really add much more to what the previous reviewers have said - the Eden Mar / Porto Mar complex really is tremendous and, speaking for both of us, we had a marvelous vacation here.

We had room 1116 which was adjacent to the reception, and directly over one of the bars, but we never had a problem with noise or disturbance.

We were half-board, for ten nights, and ate mainly in the Portuguese Restaurant, "Alfama", as we wanted to taste typical local fare. The standard was extremely high; food was cooked to order, and plated up with a flourish normally found in decent restaurants outside of hotels. We had a couple of meals in the buffet restaurant, "Atlantica" and found the food standard to be top-end hotel buffet standard, and it seemed to be used more by our continental cousin than Brits. You can make reservations at the Basilico and Med a la carte restaurants, and if you're half board basis could transfer 17euro each against the bill. We didn't so I can't comment.
Entertainment was pretty good in the bars around the complex - far better than some I've been to in Greece and Mexico - though I can appreciate that it may not be to everyones taste.

There were a few kids here - not many - and although there's a nice crèche room, I never saw it used, nor did we see any "animations" specifically aimed at kids. Parents should check before booking. For adults, the hotel offer (free) guided tour around the gardens (gorgeous gardens in their own right), kitchen tours, Portuguese lessons, a guided tour round the old town, plus lots more.

All of the staff were professional, and nice people too, and in this I include the receptions girls, the waiters and waitresses, the pool lads, animation team and, perhaps controversially, the Time Share girl!

Yes, there is a timeshare element to the hotel (The Residence section) but the selling is very, very, "soft-sell" and nothing like the almost legalised kidnapping that one can find in other parts of the world. We accepted the "free" glass of wine one evening, listened to the young lady's sale blurb, and politely turned down the offer to view the suites on offer, purely because we prefer to book spontaneous holidays at varied time through the year. Friends (Bill & Christine) took the viewing tour and received vouchers to use round the hotel, which was nice, but for us, time in the sun was more precious.

The hotel is a fair walk into the main town, maybe a mile and a bit - a taxi ride of typically 6 to 7 euros - and there is a lot to see and do, depending on your preferences. During the day the hotel lays on a nice courtesy coach into town (leaves from outside Porto Mare entrance) and back, but take my advice and make sure you know exactly where the pick up points (theres two) are in town, and at what time, because it can be a bit irregular.

I strongly think that, if the complex maintains similar reports, we'll be back next or year or the year after. We loved the climate, the hotel and all the local people we met.

Stayed for 5 nights. The staff were very good. The recepitionists especially so,being very knowledgeable and very helpfull. The junior suite we stayed in was roomy. The facilities were extensive with plenty of room around the pool areas. We didn't eat at the Hotel apart from lunch on one day.The food was quite acceptable on that occasion (if not spectacular)>The Hotel was about 20/25 minutes walk from the old town were the best food was to be had.But there is a bus stop outside the Hotel with buses running every few minutes. You can buy a Giro bus pass for a few euros which is excellent value. All in all a very pleasant experience and I can thoroughly recommend the hotel.I paid about 105 Euros a night.I booked it in a hurry and didn't have time to check out deals and I'm sure that if I had more time I could have had a better deal. But even at that price I thought it was good value

Having just returned from a one week stay at the Eden Mar, I can only say how pleased we were to discover that the hotel was as good as all the reviews say!
We selected a superior studio which was large, with a small kitchenette and a spacious balcony. From how the hotel is situated, I would imagine that all of the rooms have a sea view. Ours was obscured only by the largest palm trees I have ever seen!
Conveniently, as other reviewers point out, the Pingo supermarket (at the side and rear of the hotel) has a very extensive choice and is very reasonably priced. On the other side of the hotel, next to The Residence, is a self service launderette. There is a drying rack on the balcony so it is easy to wash out small items and put out to dry. We did ask Reception for an iron and ironing board - which remained with us for the whole week. No need to take the travel iron! The hotel supplies tea and coffee but not milk. You will need to nip to Pingo when you arrive!
The towels were thick and fluffy and changed as often as you wish. Pool towels are also supplied, as are spa robes! The beds were very comfortable - even taking into account that the double is two single beds pushed together. The his and hers sinks, set in marble, made the bathroom spacious, even for two. Hot water was plentiful and the shower powerful.
All areas of the hotel were spotlessly clean. All the staff we encountered were very friendly and happy to help. All in all this is an excellent four star hotel. Breakfast choices were extensive. We ate in the Porto Mar hotel breakfst room - the Atlantica. The hotels are connected by a corridor This room is far more spacious than the dedicated Eden Mar breakfast room. In the Atlantica, there is live cooking of all things 'eggy'! There is even sparkling wine available next to the juices - bucks fizz for breakfast.
The hotel provides a free bus to Funchal. We made use of this every day. We bought yellow bus Giro tickets from the grey booths in Funchal and charged them up at the kiosks. This worked out at about 1 euro per journey, From the lido area, the 48 goes up to Monte. We then came down in the cable car - beautiful views. We saw most of the East of the Island using the local buses. We did a tour of the West, for a full day - this was fantastic. The price was reasonable and included a lovely 3 course lunch with a bottle of wine. Beware of offers in the local tourist information centre. Most of them hinge on attending a timeshare presentation which they say lasts 90 minutes - it actually lasts over 3 hours! Strawberry World tours have a good reputation and are just in front of the hotel.
There are plenty of lovely places to eat. We had steak on a stone twice (the daily menu for 14.50 euros is excellent value for 3 large courses - beware the apple pie - it is huge but so delicious.) Up on the main road, we visited Casa Italia, again look at the specials board. We found this restaurant to be so much more friendly than the Casa Italia at the side of the hotel). There are many places to eat in the Old Town and under the marina - you will see the steps down to a few restaurants.
All in all we found Madeira to be stunning, really green and beautiful. As previous reviewers note, there are many older visitors but we did see some families with young children. There are many tropical trees and plants almost everywhere you look. A truly delightful island.

Our holiday started the moment we came into land at Funchal airport - built on stilts out into the sea it's one of the wonders of Madeira. Our next surprise was being upgraded at the Hotel Eden Mar. We had originally booked a junior suite but when we arrived we were advised that we would be in The Residence, one of the three hotels that make up the Porto Bay complex, Porto Mare and Eden Mar being the other two. All of these hotels are linked with internal corridors and the centre of the complex houses swimming pools, sun bed areas, giant chess, mini golf and numerous gardens. The complex is built on the hillside (it's hard to find anywhere on the flat in Madeira) therefore when you are on ground level at reception and you need to get to The Residence at the far side you actually end up on the 2nd level!! It took some getting used to but after several times of getting lost we eventually found our room, or should I say 'small bungalow'!!! We were shown into a two bedroomed suite with a large lounge area, two balconies and a beautiful sea view!! Now that's what I call value for money!!
Visitors to Madeira are predominantly middle aged onwards so we were pretty much the youngest on the majority of tours we took around the island, not that this bothered us. In fact, it was possibly the first holiday we had enjoyed without the inevitable 'lager louts' . The title of this review comes from something my husband said whilst we were on one of the day tours of the island - '" I daren't close my eyes for a snooze as there's too much to see". And there is! The day trips are a must if you want to see the island, despite it feeling like you are in the coach from the Italian Job going up the winding mountain road!! The amazing feats of engineering. It makes you wonder how they ever got the building materials up the mountains to build anything in the first place. There are over 150 road tunnels on the island, the longest is over 3km long. Our tour guide advised us that most of the madeirans live in the villages on the hillside and travel into Funchal to work. You can reach Funchal from anywhere on the island in little more than 35 minutes by using the excellent road system.
Because of the micro climates over the island plant life differs from north to south. There are banana plantations, orchids, trees by the million, including europes largest laurel forest. Most of these however are exported.
Funchal is a major cruise ship destination and every day there are one or more cruise ships in the harbour. A typical day for these visitors is usually a visit into Funchal, see the fish and flower market and a trip on the cable car to Monte Palace Botanical Gardens in the mountains.
We spent a lot of time on tours seeing the island and marvelling at the culture, (we used Strawberry world) but if you just wanted to laze by the pool that was just as acceptable.
The restaurants around the hotel complex are very varied and you can eat anything from pizza to sushi. The prizes also vary but on the whole are reasonable.
Tip: take good walking shoes, you'll need them, and a camera!

In fact we had dreadful weather while we were there, but at least we were very comfortable and well looked after.

What a great place to stay. Booked purely on reviews from other trip advisor reviewers and they weren't wrong. A lovely location, a really lovely room although in need of updating purely because the furniture was little old and we saw the rooms in the newer Porto hotels in Madeira which were much fresher. We think it was actually being re-furbished once we had left but they are doing it room by room so don't let this put you off. The room we had was big and the kitchen area a real bonus as there is a supermarket on site. Very clean, liked the carpet on the floor as this reduced any noise but couldn't hear a thing! The view was great, the food good. We only ate in the buffet restaurant on the half board option but there were plenty of choices and no chips, not once! Being able to use the Porto Mar's shared facilities was good so pleby of options to choose from. The Bar prices were a little expensive but that could be the value of the pound at the moment. We want to come back and would not pick anywhere else except another of the Porto hotels!

We had the Eden Mar recommended by friends and we weren't disappointed. The Hotel, the location, the Staff, the Island, the climate. We didn't find fault with anything. On the advice of a friend we asked for a room on one of the upper floors and our view was stunning. The fact that the room was a suite was a bonus, we had quite a few lunches on the balcony overlooking the lovely gardens and the sea.

There were a number of restaurants in the area including, sushi bar, Chinese, Italian, and Portuguise.

From looking at other hotels in the area we definitely chose the best one. The breakfasts had everything and catered for all. The evening meals were also very good, but weren't cheap, and all the facilities were excellent. The staff were so attentive even down to a bottle of champagne in our room with a card for my birthday, we hadn't told them this but they had taken the information from our passports, thats the sort of attention to detail you get at the Eden Mar and we are definitely going back again

  • Liked — The suite room with facilities for making own meals if we so wished, and the staff were excellent.
