“a good location”

We chose the Cliff Bay after reading the reviews on trip advisor, and while not as enamoured of the hotel ambiance as some of the reviewers, it is probably the best place to stay in Funchal. Apart from Reid's, most of the other big hotels are concrete monstrosities (although presumably nice inside). The Cliff Bay has the advantage of its location, where, if you ask (and pay the supplement) for a side sea view, you get a lovely vista of Funchal and the sea, and to one side, Reid's palace - but you don't see the concrete monstrosities mentioned above. We had Room 226, (standard room) with large balcony. We would have preferred to be higher up but again, you pay more for that. The live entertainment from "Le Cliff " was intrusive on occasion, but finished at 11.30pm.
Breakfast was great; but the evening buffet is shockingly expensive! €36 each - only worth it if you haven't eaten for a few days.

Good amenities and helpful staff, especially when our airport transfer failed to materialise and the receptionist made numerous phone calls for us to resolve the problem.
A hike into town, but only a €4 taxi ride.
Nice fluffy bathrobes and toiletries but no room slippers, which I would have expected in a 5* hotel; also the hair dryer was a "state-of-the-ark" model, attached to the wall - I think it's about time they updated them.
Part of the Porto Bay group, they have a 4* place downtown which looks nice, and The Residence at the Lido. (Lots of building going on at the Lido end of town)

Just returned from a week in Madeira - our first visit to the island. After 3 nights in Monte we stayed for 4 nights at the Cliff Bay and were very impressed with the hotel - we'd echo all the positive comments made by other reviewers. Room 543 had a fabulous sea view and the only noise was that of the sea crashing on the rocks below. Great choice for breakfast in the restaurant and no problem getting into Funchal in the evenings (on foot or taking a taxi or the local bus) for a wide range of restaurants, particularly on Rua de Santa Maria in the old town. We'd particularly recommend Restaurante Gaviao Novo for the excellent food and very friendly staff.

The weather wasn't very good during our stay but the indoor/outdoor pool at the hotel provided the opportunity for a swim even in poor weather.

We like to explore new places but, if we return to Madeira one day, we'd certainly go back to the Cliff Bay.

The Cliff Bay is simply a wonderful hotel. Beautiful pools, one outdoor salt water pool and one indoor outdoor pool. Beautiful grounds. Lovely building and rooms. I stayed in room 126, and I think it is bigger than the average room. It had a spectacular full on sea view from the balcony. I usually like a room that's higher up, but I ultimately decided that it was nice not to be more than one floor away from anything I wanted to do there.

The breakfast is very good. It's huge and varied. The fresh fruit was especially fine.

There's a pretty nice gym with a variety of new and well-maintained machines. There's a sauna and a steam room and an ice cold shower for when those get to be too much.

I really had a wonderful time. The staff was so accomodating and helpful. Everything was truly great about this hotel. Shopping around a little on the internet got me a not exhorbitant rate, too. There is a 10 euro charge per day for internet in one's room.

  • Liked — the facilities overall
  • Disliked — a little far from the center of town, just a little

My daughter and I stayed at The Cliff Bay in January 08 and had a fabulous holiday. I booked only 3 weeks before we travelled so I had to take the twin room offered (room 103) I thought I might be disappointed with the room but I was very pleasantly suprised. We had a lovely view of the garden and sea. The beds were huge and the room in general plenty big enough for two. It was spotlessly clean throughout our stay. If I had to mention a down side the room was near to the kitchen and occasionally we could hear noise. Also one day we were left no hand towels in the bathroom which is not 5 star standard. I asked if they had bigger rooms for if we returned with my husband and they arranged for me to view several other rooms which was very helpful. The swimming pools are superb especially the indoor heated pool. We ate in The Rose Garden one evening, the food was good but nothing special and was quite expensive. There are some cheaper restaurants in walking distance and the food is just as good.
Beware of taxi drivers as some don't put their meters on and charge alot more than they should. Always insist they use the meter.
I would definately return to The Cliff Bay and would recommend it to anyone wanting a peaceful, relaxing holiday.

My husband and I have just returned from a 5-day break at the Cl;iff Bay in Funchal. It was our first time in Madeira and the hotel had been recommended by some friends. We were not disappointed. We had booked a garden view room, with the promise of a side sea view upgrade if available. Our room was delightful, with a wonderful view over the garden and sea. The bed was huge (as noted by another reviewer, more like 2 double beds pushed together) and our balcony was large, with a table and 2 comfortable chairs.
The holiday was to celebrate my husband's birthday, though we had not told the hotel staff. However, somebody must have noticed all his birthday cards because at about 5.00 pm there was a knock at the door and a cake complete with candle was delivered to our room. Such a nice gesture!
We ate in the Rose Garden on our first evening because we were too tired to go out. The buffet food was delicious, with lots of choice. However, when compared with some of the nearby restaurants, it is a little expensive. The breakfast buffet was also lovely, with lots of choice. I don't know how they do it, but the scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked every day (it is so easy to overcook them, especially on a buffet).
The pools and terraces are lovely and the whole place is so calm and peaceful. The staff are efficient and friendly, yet unobtrusive. We will definitely return.

Quite simply we had one of the best holidays we have ever had.
Travelled with my wife and my 2 children aged 13 and 10.
Found the rooms luxurious, staff fantastic, hotel peaceful, spotless and well deserving of a quality status.
Would return without hesitation.
Ample places to eat in the near vacinity or in town, walking was not a chore but could be a problem for elderly, infirm or families with younger children, although taxis are in abundance.
Children are welcomed, but Cliff Bay has not allowed its standards to drop (thankfully) and lowered itself to the maw, paw and the weans with matching football tops level.
A hotel for families who appreciate high quality, attentive staff and respect other people's right to have a tranquil holiday!

Some building works near by but not intrusive by any means.

Magnificent views (ask for a sea view when booking).

We stayed at The Cliff Bay for a week in December and had a very enjoyable stay. There was nothing to fault - the staff were extremely polite and helpful - the room was large and very clean and we had a great balcony overlooking the sea and harbour.

The hotel is well located - just next door to Reid's - and it's only a 15 minute (downhill) walk into Funchal. The breakfasts were excellent with plenty of choice at the hot and cold buffet with the usual glass of cava if you want it! The evening buffet in the Rose Garden didn't look anything to complain about however we ate out every night as there was such a good selection of Chinese/Indian/Japanese/Italian and Madeiran restaurants all within a 10 minute walk. We spoilt ourselves with a meal at the Villa Cipriani restaurant, just next door, on our last night - try and get a table on the terrace if you go.

The spa facilities at the hotel were clean and well-maintained with an indoor outdoor pool complex/jacuzzi/sauna and plenty of comfortable loungers/towels were available both indoors and out.

We would definitely stay here again.
