Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: Set within the magnificent Palheiro Estate and lying adjacent to the five-star Madeira Island Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro – a Relais & Châteaux property – the 18-hole, par 72 Championship golf course meanders through a pristine environment of maritime pine and botanical woodland embroidered with lush, sub-tropical vegetation. At nearly 500 m (1640 ft) above sea level, the location is blessed with dramatic views of Madeira’s mountainous skyline and the vast Atlantic Ocean. Nestling below just 10 minutes away is Funchal, the island’s capital. Designed by renowned golf architect Cabell B. Robinson, this picturesque layout with year-round appeal takes full advantage of Madeira’s hilly terrain, with abrupt ridges and deep valleys providing a compelling challenge for even the most seasoned golfer.Teeing off here is to walk through a verdant and tranquil 200-year-old country estate, and an abundance of fragrant, exotic flora lends the course a unique and singular quality.

“Good course but not in the top bracket -yet”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

I enjoyed Palheiro but felt it was a bit weak in places.
The club house is very good ,with the best views on the course and the staff there and on the course were fine..
There are quite a few blind shots and the condition in places was dry underfoot particularly the last 4 or 5 holes
Think the cost of buggies at 45 euro's is high and the cart paths not great
Having said all that it is on a very difficult terrain and generally is kept in fine shape.
Would like to have another crack at it next year

“Nice playing and looking course”
Reviewed January 13, 2013 via mobile

Spectacular views from a nice course. The green fees were reasonable for such a high class course. Played this course after Santo Da Serra and must say I preferred this course even though it was slightly more expensive, but I would still definitely play both courses as they are both quality. Some challenging holes and the greens even more so, but was still a highly enjoyable round, especially the 10/11th hole par 3 where you hit over a ravine. The clubhouse has good facilities, and the staff were friendly. We booked through our hotel and the course picked and dropped us off which was very helpful.

“terrific views, holes and fairways”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Well kept and beautiful course, with some stunning holes.
I hate 12, which I call Burma Road, not keen on 17 either, lose too many balls. But it just tells me I need to become a better golfer.
