Owner description: Set within the magnificent Palheiro Estate and lying adjacent to the five-star Madeira Island Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro – a Relais & Châteaux property – the 18-hole, par 72 Championship golf course meanders through a pristine environment of maritime pine and botanical woodland embroidered with lush, sub-tropical vegetation. At nearly 500 m (1640 ft) above sea level, the location is blessed with dramatic views of Madeira’s mountainous skyline and the vast Atlantic Ocean. Nestling below just 10 minutes away is Funchal, the island’s capital. Designed by renowned golf architect Cabell B. Robinson, this picturesque layout with year-round appeal takes full advantage of Madeira’s hilly terrain, with abrupt ridges and deep valleys providing a compelling challenge for even the most seasoned golfer.Teeing off here is to walk through a verdant and tranquil 200-year-old country estate, and an abundance of fragrant, exotic flora lends the course a unique and singular quality.

Spectacular views from a nice course. The green fees were reasonable for such a high class course. Played this course after Santo Da Serra and must say I preferred this course even though it was slightly more expensive, but I would still definitely play both courses as they are both quality. Some challenging holes and the greens even more so, but was still a highly enjoyable round, especially the 10/11th hole par 3 where you hit over a ravine. The clubhouse has good facilities, and the staff were friendly. We booked through our hotel and the course picked and dropped us off which was very helpful.

Well kept and beautiful course, with some stunning holes.
I hate 12, which I call Burma Road, not keen on 17 either, lose too many balls. But it just tells me I need to become a better golfer.

Fantastic golf course with breath taking views! even for the occasional player like myself it was thoroughly enjoyable. We also used the tennis courts available, along with the outdoor pool. If feeling like a pamper you can have one in the treatment rooms located just alongside the pool...lovely!. We have not eaten in the golf cafe yet but have eaten in the golf Hotel restaurant for lunch as well as dinner, and both times was mouth wateringly good!. Dinner was i may add on the more formal side "posher" if you like but did not detract from being a wonderful meal!. I may add the staff were very attentive to our needs. Would recommend for all!. Hence why we are fortunate enough to be going again next week! 2012 hooray!.

This is one of those golf courses that people like to be seen. Everything seems perfect, at least on the surface - the course is set in a magnificent location, in the hills overlooking the ocean, and every blade of grass, bush and flower bed is manicured within an inch of its life. And that´s the problem with this place; it´s just too artificial. Try out the hotel or cafe and you´ll soon find that the staff are rude and most of the golfers even ruder. Don´t bother. There are plenty of better courses where you are made to feel welcome.
