Take a number 1, 2, 24 or 48 yellow bus towards the west, past the lido, Forum Shopping, towards Praia Formosa, but before the Angel roundabout. It will only take approximately 20 minutes. Get off & walk back the way you have come. Do not be put off by the concrete skeleton of the much mourned Madeira Palacio Hotel opposite, nor be distracted by the flashier Solar Dajudo below. Just climb the steps to where Marcus will greet you with a gentle smile and escort you to your table of choice in the simple cafe style restaurant, or perhaps outside on the balcony. Watch the joggers running past below, as you nibble a few peanuts, washed down by your aperitif, a glass of Sercial(madeira)perhaps, as you decide what to eat tonight. The best avocado & prawn ever tasted and big enough for 2 to share, or the delicious fish soup to start? Followed by espada ( the local fish, prepared 2 ways), the espetada (beef on a skewer), or a fillet steak . You will be spoilt for choice. All freshly cooked on the premises. To accompany your meal, there is an ample wine list of Portuguese wines. For us a half bottle of BSE with the starters and a red from the Dao region with the steaks. If you have room, the homemade apple pie made by Dina and chocolate mousse are our favourites. Then coffee. All served in a relaxed , attentive, yet unobtrusive way, by Marcus, who has worked there for 23 years. This is not a sophisticated establishment, nor does it try to be. It serves honest, affordable, home cooked food, which gives a lot of those pretentious places in town a good run for their money. The locals come here, to have a drink, catch up & have a bite to eat. Everyone is made to feel welcome. Nearby is a local little parade of shops. If you are self catering there is a delightful fruit & veg shop, a bakery for fresh rolls & croissant for breakfast and a mini market, with fresh milk, beers, giro tickets for the buses and much more. Everyone is so friendly. So even if you are on fully exclusive at the Regency Palace, Pestana Garden or Bay, why not skip hotel buffet for once and try something local and tasty. I know you will not be disappointed. I just wish the marketing staff at the hotels would recommend this little, family run, restaurant. They deserve it. Thank you Dina, Marcus and all for making our holiday such a memorable one. See you next year!
Apart from our first "blow out" meal, when we had everything, and it cost E69, the other meals cost between E31.50-E40.00 This was for aperitifs, 2 courses, 1 large beer ,half a bottle of wine, large still water and coffee. All very reasonable.
