Go for the package that includes the tour around the island! The trip is all day long, and you can buy breakfast and or dinner on the boat! On the way we rode first class, but I wouldn't nessisarily do it again. The breakfast in first class wasn't very good. But the view of the journey was beautiful, as you are travelling forward. (this is an extra 11euros). On the way back we sat on the back of the boat on the outside tables and chairs and had some pizza that you can order at the bars inside. Dependant on your style this was more for us! The beach itself is BEAUTIFUL! The sea is clean and gorgeous and their are nice cafe-restaurants down the beach so you can have a lovely lunch!

I had pre-booked this day out from the UK having been many times to Madeira but not visited Porto Santo. With first class supplement the cost was €148. The boat is very well appointed (in first class) and a complimentary breakfast was available as we sailed at 8 am. Fortunately my wife and I retained ours because as we left the lee of Madeira a thick fog descended and the sea went wild. As experienced cruisers it was about the worst we had experienced and other fellow passengers were very seasick.
Once on Porto Santo the weather improved with fairly high winds but sunshine. Our Funchal hotel had contacted its sister establishment, The Hotel Porto Santo, and we were able to use its facilities during our visit. The beach is delightful and not over developed. We walked for over an hour without reaching the end.
The ferry berth is some way from the town but a bus costs about €3.00 return.
The return to Madeira was a little smoother but one fellow traveller appeared to have left his wife to experience it whilst, presumably, returning by air. A quite reasonable complimentary buffet was on offer in the first class lounge.

I was interested to see this island and due to lack of time i could only do the day tour ...Here are some suggestions.....if you go to hang out on the beach it's a perfect spot. I wanted to see more so on the one day tour I could book a tour that took about 2 hours for about 16 euro . It was more than worth it to learn about this place , at one of the stops there were local people cooking meat on a bar b q and we were offered some of the amazing food....typical of portugues people to be so hospitabel.
I was there in October , off season, the weather was perfect , the beaches were empty . After the island tour I walked the beach with nothing but the sound of waves crashing, the cry of gulls, mixed with the smell of salt water .. i walked barefoot till i reached a cafe and had a glass of wine ..if you need to escape this is the place to go ...rental rates off season are amazing..I plan to go back...it is a quiet place off season which appeals to me . there are restaurans, but if you get an apartment the local stores can provide you with quality fruit, veg and so much more ...

Thoroughly enjoyable trip with Thomsons whose local guide/minibus driver was brilliant. The ferry was a cut above normal ferries and as a day out was well worth the money.

After several trips to madeira we promised ourselves a visit to Porta santo via the ferry. It was a full day leaving at 8am and getting back to our hotel in funchal about 11pm. The boat was modern, clean but very congested. The cost of our ticket included a coach trip around porto santo island. This was worth doing and took 2 hours which to be fair could easily have been done in an hour. If we had not taken the coach tour we would have had to walk from the ferry to the town which was probably a couple of miles. The package of ferry ticket being picked up from the hotel and tour of the island cost about 85 euro which we thought was quite expensive in comparison to other tours on madeira. the island of porto santo was well worth the trip but when you have done it thats about it. Glad we went but not something we will repeat on subsequent visits
