We stopped by here for lunch and were disappointed in the food. First off however the place was very clean, with a friendly waiter. We both ordered a garden salad, which was fine, however the pizza we ordered was not very good. Very doughy and uncooked. It appeared to be almost soggy and had no tomato base. Even though we split our meal, it still was 30 euros total.

We found Tavira when walking around the back streets of Funchal. The location is not the best but who cares when the food and service are so good. Good food at reasonable prices but the service makes it even better. The staff are very friendly and welcoming (as most are in Madeira) and are really willing to suggest places to visit, routes to take etc. If you are looking to eat somewhere other than the usual tourist restaurants then look out for Tavira on Rua da Queimada de Cima.

We had lunch here last year, and enjoyed it, so came back this year. Never thought to put a post, but having read the others I felt we should.
The food was lovely, my husband loved his sardines, I had tuna salad which was the usual. We especially liked chatting to the waiter who talked to us about walks around Madeira, we found him very pleasant. Overall it was a lovely stop in a busy part of town with loads of cafes, so to search it out twice says something I think.

We ate in this restaurant last night and were very disappointed with our meal.
The owner suggested we order the squid skewer and some fish. The fish was fine but the disgusting tinned carrots with some mushy brussels sprouts were not so good.
My husbands squid was the toughest ever encountered - I shared the fish with him but my jaws could not manage the big chew needed for the squid!
I told the owner that the fish was fine but the squid was very tough. He was quite huffy and told us that was how it is sometimes if the squid is frozen.
We paid up and he never spoke to us - not even to say thank you!
In our 3 weeks in Madeira we have never met anyone so unfriendly.
His prices were not cheap either.
This is what happens when you only read one review.

TAVIRA-Restaurant, Gerente at Tavira, responded to this reviewResponded June 25, 2013

The management of the TAVIRA Restaurant has the need to clarify the following:

This lady entered the restaurant with a rude atitude, telling the waiter that she would make a review on Tripadvisor.
After they had eaten everything on the dish they called the waiter to say that the Squid was tough. The waiter, asked gently if she ever had tasted Squid before and she said "no" and asked back if the Squid were fresh fished. The waiter gently explain that Squid is fresh but kept frozen, obviously, and the texture is not like a regular boned fish, but a mollusk.
After this, the lady got very upset by seeing there were nothing we could do about, because she didn't claim before eating the meal to order something else.

This is a small restaurant that does not have a lot of decoration or fancy things that would attract the attention of tourists. Instead, it is focused on serving good food and providing a great service to all, locals and tourists, to the ones wanting just to have a good sip of Madeira wine to the ones having a full meal. We ate at the Tavira twice in our stay in Madeira and were very pleased with the efficiency and warmth of Ana and Manoel which served us very well. The food is not fancy and the menu offers typical Portuguese/Madeira dishes. We tried meat (carne a vinha d'alho and espetada) and fish based (espada and calamari) dishes and they were all good. If you want a home feel both in the service provided and the food and want to get away of the tourist traps, this is the place to go.
