We visited in January but the only plants we could see were ferns. It's extremely hilly and although we are fit 60 year olds the thought of climbing back up to the exit put us off.

Not too much colour in January but pleasant to walk around. Don't forget your free wine tasting at the cafe.

We missed this on our previous two trips to Madeira and now wonder why. Probably because we thought that the 10 entry fee was a little steep, but we were wrong - it's worth every cent. Remember to allow plenty of time, as the gardens are extensive and steep! Also plenty of photo opportunities.

Only one complaint (and another reviewer made a similar observation), the refreshment facilities were poor. The cafe is situated at the bottom corner of the gardens and should be more central. It also only provided a half hearted selection of sandwiches and snacks. This is an ideal situation in which to provide better catering facilities and at the same time make more money to support the work of the trust that maintains these wonderful gardens. How about using the big house?

This is a very good garden with plenty to see, set with a Chinese theme and finishing at the bottom of a steep downward journey with a truly excellent pool and stunning waterfall. Although there is a golf buggy ride back up to the entrance (for €4 which we personally didn't need) it is not a garden for people who can't walk down (and up) a lot of steps.

Wearing 'good' shoes is a must for this exotic garden and be prepared to retain some energy for the ascent up to the exit. The ceramic tiles on the walls as one descends provide an overview of the history of Portugal .
