Supposed to be a Japanese garden but has Chinese elements. Nevertheless worth the trip if you like gardens. Very good on a hot day as there is a bit more shade up here. Lots to see with nice cafe, really need to set aside 1/2 a day to to do it justice Take the cable car here.

Having been before in September I was not expecting the wonderful flowers available in February, the Rhodadendrums and azalias were in bloom as was the magnolia and the orchids, it was all wonderful to see. Wish our garden looked as good.
The oriental gardens awith bridges and statues are pleasant places to sit and dream. The display of crystals are worth seeing, and the 10 euro entrance fee was reasonable when I consider how much lesser gardens in the UK charge. Only downsides are the cobbles and steps, so wear sensible shoes. The cafe did not offer a big selection of food, and was somewhat pricey, but nice to have a sit down and enjoy the view.
Do visit by bus it is a really exciting ride with all the bends and step hills, and a reasonable price as buses charge one price in and around Funchal.

Very interesting garden on many levels, so steep to walk through but lovely and some interesting tiled displays on Portuguese history.

A bit disappointed as not cheap (10 euros). The gardens are well landscaped on the side of a hill and would have been stunning if they had been colourful, but the trees and plants were nothing out of the ordinary. Perhaps it was the time of year, but trees and plants were in full bloom in other parts of the island.

The tropical gardens were well worth the visit. Flowers, plants, lakes, waterfalls and themed gardens. It took about 3 hours to get around and you need to allow at least that if you want to see everything. It's quite steep in places and some of the paths need careful navigation as they are made of lots of little and some sharp stones. The are some great views when you get to the bottom. You will need suitable walking shoes. Well worth the 10 euros.
