All the while you are walking downwards you are wonderful what other beautiful sights you will see, it was worth it, the lake and swans, the waterfalls, the peace and tranquility, just a heaven on earth. Every time we go we go back to Madiera we go over and over again to these lovely gardens.

“A nice garden, quite interesting, fair value.”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

Not the finest or most interesting botanical garden- there are many which are much better - but fair value and a nice wander round.

“Beautiful gardens, A great day out for all”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

The Tropical gardens at Monte are a great place to visit for the young and old. Lots of different areas to discover and the Koi Carp are amazing. You could easily spend most of a day here. There is also a nice little cafe for tea and cake , plus other snacks.

“Far too hilly”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

Be warned if you have any sort of walking, leg, hip problem, suffer from Angina or other heart problems, you will not be able to manage walking in these gardens. They are extremely steep and many of the paths are made up of very small cobble like stones. You start off at the top and go down and down. You then, of course, have to come back up to the exit. The only flat gardens are apparantly the Blandy gardens so that would be a better option.

“monte palace tropical garden”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

This is a fascinating place, even for someone like myself, who is not skilled at gardening.Set on the hills overlooking Funchal, and normally accessed by cablecar, which is an interesting ride, the gardens stretch down the hiilside for quite a distance. There are all sorts of features in the garden. One I found very interesting is a history of Portugal in about 40 tiles, set along the main path. There is a lovely lake and 2 sets of oriental gardens and fishponds, grottoes, fountains and many other features. There is a certain amount of climbing involved, but at 78 and 80 my wife and I were able to cope, taking various stops to admire the view! We spent about 3 hours here, including a short stop at the cafe and felt it was worth that effort.
