Stunning place and easy to walk round however it's such a shame that the cafe is a let down as the food was poor.

What a delight. Even in the winter time there was plenty to see. The water features are something else, the oriental design and the koi carp are just amazing. We loved the traditional blue & white tiles which lined the slope & detailed the history of Madeira. This was particularly helpful on the way up as you were so busy reading & looking that you didn't notice the incline. It was lovely too to have a free glass of madeira wine from the lovely little cafe with its great Christmas decorations. You could also hear the peace and inhale the clean air and the smell of the plants. One of the loveliest gardens we have ever been to.

Unfortunately the day we came here we had rain showers nearly all day and there isn't much shelter in the gardens. The gardens are very lush and well maintained. We liked the Japanese gardens with all the Koi carp fish. There are some art displays of African sculptures but they were all a bit 'samey'. There was also a large display of various crystals such as quartz and tourmaline etc, these were much more interesting. The gardens, as the rest of madeira, is built on a hill so its uo and down, but not overally exherting. There is a small cafe with nice views over the city below.

Interesting and extensive gardens and sculptures where you can take a stroll amongst well kept paths and features. Be ready for some hillside walking. There is a large exhibition of African soapstones which is a bit repetitive although the mineral collection is more interesting.

While walking around I was in awe of how gorgeous this place was. The swan lake with the fountain and waterfall is the most beautiful part. You can't visit Funchal without seeing these gardens!
