Review of Palheiro Gardens

Attraction details
Owner description: The gardens at "Quinta do Palheiro" are famous not only for the variety of plants that grow there but for the beauty of their setting in the hills to the east of Funchal, the capital of Madeira. Madeira has long been called the "Garden Isle" and it seems that almost anything will grow in its fertile soil. The Palheiro gardens are situated at about 500 meters above sea level and were started in 1801 by the original owner the Conde de Carvalhal. He introduced Camellias to the Island, hence our vast collection. The gardens, some 14 hectares (with about 650 species of plants),include the Camellia avenue, Main Garden, Sunken Garden, Rose Garden, Long Border and the Ladies' Garden where you find the tea house. There is also the Ribeiro do Inferno, a deep valley with treeferns and indigenous plants.

“Seen better days”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2014

lovely spot next to spectacular golfcourse . many fantastic trees from all over the world . Huge Norfolk island Pine and The biggest tulip tree I have ever seen .
the garden does not compare favourably with English gardens with our wonderful herbaceous borders . Saw three local men planting a new bit of lawn . their heart was not in it . The rose garden was not at its best . The rose garden in Greenwich Park London is far superior . Very poor printed garden guide . The Monte garden was better but it was all on a steep hill . At least Palheiro was more or less flat .

“Very nice gardens and worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2014

Pleasant secluded spot. Nice tea room for light refreshments. Well worth a visit.

You can get there by public transport.

Our visit in June saw some of the flowering shrubs past their best. May have been even better in May.

“Difficult to find but worthwhile the visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2014

The gardens are privately owned and very nice. The Palheiro golf course borders the gardens and from their coffee / tea house you can peak onto the course. We enjoyed strolling through the gardens. We parked outside the ticket office which meant that it was quite a long way to the actual entrance of the park. While we walked down the road, we saw other visitors drive inside with their car. They even offered my mother (60+) a lift.

“our favorite garden: Palheiro gardens”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2014

its variety of plants, trees, flowers, is incredible; there were fewer visitors than in other gardens, maybe because of the higher entrance fee; but this should not deter any garden lover; access is quite easy with the city yellow buses.

“Stunning gardens”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2014

These were the most incredible gardens in Funchal. The blend of Madeiran and English plants and design are incredible with wonderful trees, shrubs and flowers. A garden not to be missed on a visit to Funchal.
