Best to catch a taxi up to these gardens, then from the top of the gardens you can catch a cable car to Monte, where you can also view the tropical gardens, and from there another cable brings you down to the centre of Funchal. A good trip out. The Botanical gardens are really lovely, a very large Aviary is so interesting, Allow at least 1 1/2 hours, its really good.

All of the Madeira gardens are beautiful but this one is the best as i far as i am concerned. Any time of the year but especially in September.

It is definately worth a visit, and in spite of the time of year it was still very beautiful and it looked more or less the same as my memory of it from 10 years ago.

You can spend hours walking around and enjoying all the flowers and trees.

I am very impressed by the cactusses, that are abvioulsy very old.

We are planning to go to Madeira a summer and we will definately go back here.

We didn't really enjoy our visit to the botanical gardens. We sensed that it was very run down and not very well run. The natural history museum (old house) was disheveled looking and the exhibits were not well maintained.

Some of the planting was quite nice but in the main there were a number of plants i poor health and in need of cutting back) and the pathways and amenities were either dirty, unkempy or broken.

Overall this was a very underwhelming visit, not recommended!

Set on the hillside these are beautiful gardens. Admission cost 5 Euros. Exhibits are well presented with good information labels. Even at this time of year there were lots of colourful flowers in the gardens. We spent 2 hours walking up and down many of the paths and walkways. There is an interesting bird park with many different birds and parrots. I felt the birds could have had more stimulation, toys etc, especially the parrots. All the birds looked to be in good health. From the gardens we caught the cable car which took us to Monte.
