I was expecting it to be stunning giving the flora on the island but its not the most amazing gardens you'll see there and I found the caged birds section quite sad and disturbing....its time to close it...conditions for the birds looked awful.

This is a lovely attraction. The gardens are lush and tropical in the summer months but there was still plenty interesting colour and foliage when we were there in November.Accessed by cable car is in itself is quite an experience. As you are on a high plateau in the gardens there are wonderful views over the bay and Funchal. The café is nothing to write home about but is functional if you need a drink or to use the bathroom. It is a horticulturists dream but also extremely pleasant for the average tourist as it is very relaxing. There is a small natural history museum within the gardens housing a collection of stuffed birds and other relics but can be a bit boring unless you are a biologist or have an interest in taxidermy. Saying that a group of children were seemingly macabrely fascinated and if a shower should occur it is a place to take a look at. There are some quite uneven surfaces in places so it is wise to watch your footing especially after rain. It may be accessible for wheelchairs if you stick to the even paths and take a taxi up there instead of the cable car. Seemed to be most popular with the middle aged and the elderly.

We came here thinking the standard would be the same as the tropical gardens. The whole place looks tired except the centrepiece which is photo that is show in reviews and brochures. A quick visit with the caged birds being more interesting that the gardens. A lot of stagnant water as well which was no doubt the cause of the number of mosquitoes.

Liked it very much,. Lots of species to discover. Needs more retaining, and more flowering during all year round . Especially when using the title: FlowerIsland of the world.

if you have any interest in flowers and gardens, this is a must. fantastic photography opportunities too. 15 euros in a taxi or take the cable car for picturesque views. Café is ok, nothing exceptional but adequate or on a nice day you could take a picnic. i would advise trainers or good footwear, its not an even pathway in some areas. It is also very hilly which wasn't a problem for us but not perhaps for those less able to walk uphills easily.
