Owner description: A visit to the Botanical gardens provides visitors with the names and origins of the splendid variety of exotic flowers, vegetables, herbs and other useful plants found on Madeira.

In a peaceful setting around a fine house, these gardens are abundant in their stock. The visit was well worthwhile. They contrasted to Monte Palace in that they were true botanical gardens rather than a fantasy garden. A few rooms in the old house contain a somewhat ageing nature collection - quaint and characterful. The lower end of the garden houses some exotic birds in cages. There is quite a good cafe. Pity the person taking the entrance money was not more welcoming. This seems to be a characteristic in Maderia tourism, alas.

The gardens are nicely laid out and reasonably maintained - yet, I'd have liked to learn more about the unique flora of Madeira, its vegetation zones and plants. Unfortunately, the part on endemic plants is rather small, and general showy plants take most space. The little cafe is nicely done and well organized, but a bit expensive.

The botanical gardens are Okies but not much to see. The stuffed birds are ok ish but could be better maintained. Needs some more excitement there for kids to enjoy. As well.

Went up on the 2 cable cars which was spectacular. Gardens very beautiful and colourful, better in our opinion than the palace gardens. Only real issues were the caged birds, they were in very poor conditions and looked very unhappy and unhealthy, the toilet at the cafe was not nice at all and the lady at the gate was the grumpiest person we met in the whole of Madeira. Well worth a visit, just miss out the birds

Take good shoes (not flip-flops) and a lot suncream and you'll survive. We didnt have any of those so the trip wasnt so pleasant. Nice views and many plants, beautiful flowers and bird zoo. Take your time.

We took cable car from top of monte and roundtrip with tickets to garden cost 32€/2persons.
