“beautiful flowers”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2013

unexpected, clean, well-maintained public gardens, free of charge. I was there the end of April, 2013, and there were flowers everywhere.

This place is a must visit! You will just fall in love! The atmosphere, the myriad colors of the flowers...the calmness, it just surrounds you!

“Disappointing reflection on an otherwise beautiful island”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2013

Madeira itself is one big botanic garden, and the trip via two cable car rides to get to this garden is quite spectacular - BUT the garden itself is very disappointing - here are a few reasons: it is badly maintained and quite scruffy; there appears to be not sufficient money to maintain the gardens or remove the old specimens; there are no maps available to describe what is where and the staff at the entrances are actively disinterested.
On thing you should be aware of is that the gardens are on a steep slope so anyone with limited walking capability will struggle. It is best to visit it all from the top down (i.e. from where the cable car arrives and then plan to take a taxi back to town, rather than do the rturn cable car journeys - bad mistake). We have had a fantastic week in Madeira and tehse gardens were the one disappointment. Rather spend more time in the other better managed gardens.

“Amazing cacti”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2013

This garden is reached by two cable car rides, both of which give excellent views over the bay. Much of the garden is standard in the sense the plants can been seen in many other places. However the cacti collection was something else and well worth the trip.

“It was just OK but it was maybe not the best time of the year!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2013

I was a little disappointed because I found that there were not really many flowers. Although the gardens are well maintained it lacked for me a kind of* spectacularity* . We were there last week and maybe it was also because of the weather they have has 2 weeks before that the vegetation was not on its best; although whilst driving around Madeira I was impressed by the flowering amaryllises, Hortensia's, roses, Lillis, etc. in the wild and free
