“A bit dull”
Reviewed March 12, 2013

We were expecting something spectacular, but honestly you can see wonderful Flora all over Maderia without needing to come to these gardens. There are plenty of exotic birds in cages which in fact is the main attraction for many people. 5 euros addmission.

“Good gardens with very poor signage.”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

The gardens are beautiful and there are some fantastic flowers, trees and plants but they are really let down by the labelling. It was really hard to follow the maps to find the information about what was being grown. In the end this did not seriously detract from our enjoyment of the gardens but the experience could and should have been so much richer.

“Best garden in Fnchal?”
Reviewed March 8, 2013

I have visited this place at least two times before, but never in March, and I must say it has never looked better. It is so easy to spend hours there without getting bored, and the area that caught my atention more than anything this time must have been the cacti/succulents section, because there was so much in bloom there. Oh My God! The cafe is also worth a visit, with its great view over the Funchal bay. This park is simply stunning, and even if you have been there before, go again, it's one of those places that just never get tired.

“Loved these gardens - wonderful colours, profuse vegetation, and a spectacular location high up above Funchal”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

Wonderful range of plants, gorgeous colours, well-laid out, marvellous views over the town and out to sea, good signage, enough info about the gardens without being overwhelming, nice cafe, easy to reach by bus from central Funchal. Everything we'd hoped for, plus some nice quirky elements (the cave/lovers' grotto, or the cactus garden, for example)...

“Botanical Gardens Review”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

A great way to spend a morning or afternoon, you can get a yellow bus from the city centre right to the gate. There is great little cafe/bar right by the bus stop where you can get a coffee and pastry before you start and wait for the return bus afterwards, you can get a cable car across the valley from Monte. These are extensive gardens, very well kept and of great interest to anyone especially gardeners . They also have a collection of birds in aviaries.
