“Excellent Short Day Trip from Funchal”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

My wife and I walked up to the gardens from the Old Town in Funchal. (This walk is only recommended for the energetic, as it is a long way up hill). And there was excellent bus service back to Funchal at the end of our visit, and leaves right from the front gate.

The gardens were wonderful with the wide variety of flora, great colors, blooming flowers, and just about everything that you want to see in a garden. If it was this nice in January, then we are wondering how fantastic it would be in the spring/summer. Our surprise was that the gardens were so extensive... with a lot of walking required... and a lot of hills to navigate. And a nice restaurant on site to rest your legs.

We also did not realize that there was an extensive bird sanctuary on site... with exotic birds from all around the world. And another positive thing is that the price was reasonable for the garden visit.

Peaceful and relaxing place to spend a couple of hours - high above the noise of Funchal. The cati are awesome.

“Beautiful gardens”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

Even in January they had plenty of colour and interest and we would recommend a visit. Only one warning they are on quite a sttep hillside so care should be taken if you have any mobility problems
