“Fun to see”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013

Here you can buy fish, fruit, vegtables and flowers.

It is fun to see and you can buy the exotic flowers and have them delivered to you hotel and bring them back home.

The "flower ladies" are wearing traditional dresses.

Remember also to visit "Rua de Santa Maria" with beautifully decorated/painted doors - it is to streets downn from the market.

“A must visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2013

Great place to experience the hussel and bustle of a lovely flower and fruit market. Proberbly expensive to buy anything but a must visit if you are in Funchal. It has a good cafe with reasonable prices and a good place to watch the world go by. Also right next to the fish market that you should visit also.

“Visit only to see the fish market”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 15, 2013

The first section you see is the fruit and flower market. This is picturesque but a bit of a tourist trap. Whatever you can buy there can surely be bought far cheaper elsewhere. As other reviewers have made admirably clear, the upper floor of this section is even worse in this regard. The purpose of visiting this location is to see the fish market. This sells fish of all types to the local people and to restaurants. It is enjoyable to wander slowly round, watching the vendors cutting fish, scraping off the scales, washing fish and selling their wares. On view is the fabled espada fish, which is caught from some 500 metres down, on multi-hooked lines. This sharp-toothed inhabitant of the deep is the most delicious fish known to mankind and can be sampled in nearly every restaurant in Madeira. Prefer to order it simply grilled, rather than adorned with bananas or (worse) some sweet sauce. Maybe, earlier than the time when we visited, there are lobsters, crabs and prawns on sale. We did not see any of there at around 11 in the morning. Just outside the exit, to the right, is a street bar called CICA Cafetaria. They sell expresso for 0.90 Euros and interesting pastries. It is a good place to sit and watch the passers-by.

“Best fruit / vegetable / fish market”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2013

We visited the market twice and we were not disappointed with what we bought. First time was more like charity market with stalls from over the island with tasty cakes and sweets. The second time we bought the best ever big chestnuts around. We also bought large garlic bulbs which we now have planted in our garden in Scotland. The different fruits on the ground level of the market tasted very nice too. We stayed away from the top floor.

“Fruit sellers upstairs are con artists”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2013 via mobile

many people have already said this but the fruit sellers upstairs are extremely dishonest and will charge you way way over the odds for their fruit and will sometimes give you something different to what you tasted. The key is to make sure you get them to tell you up front what the cost of the fruit is before you buy it. Also if they get you to try a small cherry like fruit which will be sweet and tasty be careful you don't end up with another small red fruit that is different and tastes sour. Avoid unless you have your wits about you!
