This road is where all bus services can be picked up and where all buses finish. Ticket kiosks and transport help is plentiful. Currently the side of the road adjacent to the sea is a massive building site where flood defence measures and storm repairs are being carried out. Large Lorries and bulldozers seem to work around the clock so it is not really somewher to stay too long.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for in a place, but I prefer the streets that are more inland - not under construction, better restaurants, and more things to see..

Walk here every day. A visit to Funchal is not complete without a walk along this Avenida. Not tacky at all, just Funchal 2012 (at least there's NO Starbucks). Lots going on at the moment including building a new marina and cruise ship berth. An excellent place to watch liners come and go (at all times of the day), small boats in the marina and the odd fisherman trying his best. Fabulous place for 'Bolo do Caco', Madeira's garlic bread (do try) and chestnuts when in season. The South American band play along here nearly every day creating a great atmosphere. A very good place to start the 'Red & Yellow' hop on, hop off tours. Timeshare people are all but gone so the only thing to be aware of as in any seaside in the world is the coffee, food and beers is a little more expensive than a few streets back.

I first visited this beautiful island in 1967 and the Avenido do Mar was a magical place with locals greeting the tourists in many wonderful ways but then the city hierarchy got very greedy and decided to destroy what was wonderful about Funchal and replace the old buildings and upgrade the Avenido do Mar with disastrous effect, and now we have McDonalds, Pizza Hut and the tackiest of eateries on the edge of the bay, now the area could be anywhere in the world.
If any town planners want to see how not to spoil an areas natural beauty they could do worse than go to the Avenido do Mar in Funchal to see that architectural "vandalism" is alive and welin Madeira.

We visited a number of restaurants and could study boatlife in the harbour while eating. Also several different, big cruisers visited the harbour during our three weeks stay. Always something going on there. People fishing in the harbour and the big market close by.
