This was our 3rd visit to this hotel. If you are looking for entertainment, quizes round the pool, exciting activities, forget it, this is not for you. If you are looking to chill out in quiet relaxing gardens you will love it. This is a small hotel only about 75 room in the older part, but small is beautiful. The querky little paths around the pool and garden rooms, all cobbled in the old Maderian style, the flowers and trees give the place a gentle feel. It is not a place for anyone with mobility problems who cannot manage steps, however the access via the sister hotel's lift allows guests to easily reach the harbour etc. Stay B & B and enjoy the many restaurants within easy walking distance, especially Bernini's just outside the entrance ( to the right).

Room Tip: Upgrade to a superior room with partial sea view. Avoid room 58/59, they are over the extraction fan...

We stayed for a month, taking in Christmas and New Year on a B&B basis, and booked into the sister hotel, the Hotel Penha de Franca Mar, because of the access to the sea. A walkway(spectacular views of the harbour) and short walk connects this smaller hotel to the main one, where there are more facilities ie a dining room for evening meals. Madeira is so packed with great eating places, within walking distance of the Franca Mar, we mainly stayed put. The breakfasts were suberb. A varied buffet catered for all nationalities. Freshly cooked breakfasts were available, loads of fresh fruit, different kinds of breads and the tastiest croissants, with hams, cheeses etc. The hotel is spotlessly clean, as is the poolside with attendants always on hand. It's a family run hotel and we first heard about it while staying two hotels up in the Royal Savoy. Patrons of the Franca Mar would swim over and talk well of their hotel. The poolside restaurant is open until late afternoon and has a great view. We intend booking for next year.

Room Tip: All rooms face the sea, and have full sun most of the day. There are three storeys with lift, which...

So pleased we chose this hotel recommended by friends rather than a much larger hotel further out of town and we were delighted with the location just 2 minutes from the port and 10 minutes walk from Funchal town centre. Staff are all friendly and helpful. Our room was in the newer 'Franca Mar' building with private south/south west facing balcony and a view over the pool area and the sea, lovely place to relax and watch the occasional boat go by; the beds were very comfortable and everything was clean and fresh. There is a bar/snack bar where breakfast is served either inside or outside on the terrace and open during the day, we found this very useful for afternoon tea following our walks and sightseeing. The hotel restaurant is located in the old Quinta and is very pleasant and the food is lovely and fresh with daily specials and all very reasonably priced. A receptionist arranged car hire for us for 3 days so we could tour the island. Wifi is available free in the reception lounge area and there is a computer for guests to use if required. This is the perfect location for walking into town for buses to the Botanical Garden, Orchid Garden etc. A combined return ticket, very economical, can be purchased for bus to Botanical Garden, admission and cable car from there to Monte where the magnificent Tropical Garden is situated (extra admission charge). Also, perfect for a stroll into town in the evening to visit other restaurants, bars etc.

Room Tip: Rooms in the Quinta building do not have balconies but they overlook the lovely gardens.

I stayed in QPF for 5 nights between Christmas and New Year. The service was very good , making for a very relaxing holiday. Being so close to the centre of Funchal, made it a very short stroll back to the hotel after watching the New Year festivities.

We stayed here immediately after the New Year and found its location ideal: for buses along the coast, for the superb levada walk to Camara de Lobos, and for a variety of short delightful walks into the centre of Funchal. The restaurant was.very good and not expensive. The reception staff were very helpful - including printing out on-line check in forms for us. Our balcony overlooked lovely gardens to the sea beyond, and watching the sun set from it made a very pleasant end to each sightseeing day. There is a very nice pool with loungers within the grounds, and a lift down to a rather colder one at sea level. I cannot imagine a lovelier and more comvenient place to stay in Madeira: far better than any 5 star hotel that I can remember. If I had one suggestion. it would be for the inclusion of a sanwich and a bit more fruit on the breakfasst tray provided for those leaving early in the morning. But overall a most superb experience>

Room Tip: Payong a little extra for a 'premium' room is probably well worth it.

This is a reasonable hotel, but is not really 4 star standard in my opinion.

The positives are that the location is excellent (just down the road from the Carlton and not far from the old town), the grounds are quaint and very attractive (apart from the dog mess we saw on one occasion from what I presume is the resident canine), and the hotel staff are pretty friendly (but not in a stand out way as is suggested by others).

I have to say, the dog mess was pretty off putting - We saw it when making our way out on a trip and it made me cautious from that point - imagine walking to a sun lounger with bare feet and.....eurgh!.

The downside for us was that we stayed in the old house part of the hotel and it is fair to say that it is ready for an update. I think that it is likely that we had one of the worst rooms in the hotel. None of the issues we experienced were of the magnitude that we felt could justify running to reception with repetitive moans, but they were consistent with the room being, in our opinion, a bit shabby. One of the windows couldn't be locked (although it was on a side of the building that was high enough to make it not too much of an issue), all the door knobs felt as though they were about to drop off, the bathroom was a bit smelly, and we had a bit of an issue with ants.

We stayed for a few days over the New Year period, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of being in Madeira at this time of year - a first for us, so any issues we had with the room did not detract from the break for us, but if we had booked this hotel for our main, longer holiday in the summer then I would have been disappointed.

Just to the side of the old house is a big new block where the rooms looked much nicer and each had a big and attractive balcony. So our overall impression was that the hotel was OK, but we wished we had been in that new section instead of the old house, and it we were to come back to this hotel it would only be if we could guarantee a better and more up to date room. In practise though, we probably won't go back to this hotel, and will return to one of the more established larger hotels when we next return to this lovely island.

If you like a quaint alternative to the big brand hotels then this is not a bad choice - it did grow on me during the stay. But if you equate a 4 star rating with a splash of luxury then you may be disappointed. I think it has a 4 star rating because its facilities tick enough boxes, not because it is in any way luxurious.

Room Tip: If you ask for a sea view you risk getting the old house rooms that we felt were the worst - and the...

We have stayed in this hotel twice, unlike many returning for 20+ years and more. The hotel is quite old, but the standards of care and cleanliness are very high. We stayed in one of the garden rooms which was very spacious and lovely. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. We were on a bed and breakfast tarrif, but often had lunch on the terrace or our evening meal in the dining room where Bryan the excellent pianist played softly in the background. The family want all their guests to have a pleasant holiday. There is a heated outdoor pool and lots of beds around the pool and in the garden.
