We came for a week to celebrate a significant anniversary and took away seven days of wonderful memories.

Reid's has always been known as a Palace but is really more of a spacious country house, in a fabulous location, at which you are a special guest. The first contrast you notice (compared with an ordinary resort hotel) is that there is simply so much space inside and out. Even when the hotel is full it is easy to find a (public) room or corner of the garden where you are unlikely to be disturbed.

The staff are genuinely concerned to make your life as easy as possible. Our housekeeper kept returning all day to see if we had removed the 'Do not disturb' from our door (left their by mistake) and left little messages imploring us to let her come and do our room. Corners do not appear to be cut, e.g. the linen (and I don't mean cotton) sheets were changed every single day in our fourth floor Garden Wing room.

Restaurant service is as good as it gets and the staff at Villa Cipriani restaurant readily assisted in creating my little surprise for my wife at dinner.

I guess that on this occasion we were not thinking about cost and so I can't say whether everyone would agree on value for money. However, during our stay we met several couples who had made many visits to Reid's including one who had returned more than 30 times.

Is Reid's the best hotel property in the world? Almost certainly not. Does it deliver the best hotel service experience in the world right now? Quite possibly yes.

Perched on a cliff ledge overlooking the charming but not exactly picturesque city of Funchal, Reid's Palace is a kind of living memorial to the Madeira of the 1920s. A key stopping point on the Union Castle route to South Africa, Madeira was a congenial place for well-heeled society Brits to spend the winter, and Reid's was where they stayed, 'they' being everyone from George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill.

Reid's boasts a prime location and several stunning natural assets. My favourite is the hidden sea-level bathing terrace, which is served by a lift from the main hotel. There are also the splendid sub-tropical gardens, and the legendary tea and cocktail terrace from which one can stare at the distant Atlantic horizon like a character in a Maugham short story.

For hotel planners, heritage is also something of a curse. Even the smallest rooms (referred to endearingly as 'charming rooms' in the tariff) are delightful. But don't expect wall-to-wall Bang and Olufsen or even 21st century air conditioning (there is a/c, it's just a little asthmatic). There's only so much you can do with 19th century infrastructure.

However, to carp about these details is to miss the point. Because it's the people that make a luxury hotel. And the team at Reid's is truly on song at the moment. Everyone from the front desk to the pool attendant to the head gardener exudes enthusiasm, pride and confidence. Names are remembered. Preferences recorded. Needs anticipated.

I visited Reid's previously in 2010. The service was good. Good enough to prompt a repeat visit. This summer, I can frankly say that the service was the best I have ever experienced during a wallet-crippling lifetime of serious 5-star hotel and 6-star cruise ship addiction. The management team has instilled a service culture of the like I have seen no-where else. Reid's is a Coward-esque stage set, but the cast make it the show it is. And it deserves to be a sell-out hit.

Our first trip to Madeira and Reid's was the perfect choice of hotel. We could not fault anything. The staff helped make this an excellent stay and they cannot do enough for you.We had a Delux room on the 5th floor.

Every time we go to Madeira a drink on the terrace at Reids means we are really in Madeira on holiday
The service and old world charm are unlike any other place on the island
Don't let the place intimidate you just enjoy the views and the company you are there with
(I do think some people let the place get to them and act how they think others think they should act) but be yourself the staff are very friendly and not at all superior (which I have experienced in some very upmarket hotels in London)

We have been to a madeira a couple of times but never Reid's - we though it might be a bit formal for us. We were wrong this hotel is perfect
The service at all levels was personable and professional. The facilities are excellent, particularly the pool area, the buffet breakfast, the cocktail bar, the spa and the gym.
Our room a superior double, had everything we could have expected including a great view. the décor was charming and the servicing of the room that best we have experienced.
the Italian restaurant in the grounds, Villa Cipriani was also of the highest quality
The grounds of the hotel is well worth exploring
