Belmond Reid's Palace
Ranked #5 of 88 Hotels in Funchal
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 17, 2013

is how Reid’s Palace has been described and I think that’s very apt – what a gorgeous hotel. I loved everything about it – it’s a real “grande dame” hotel with everything on a proper scale rather
than boutique size – made a lovely change in fact as usually I prefer boutique places.

The service is outstanding, the views are sublime, the food is excellent but best of all is the bathing area and sea pool on the cliff face. I adored heading down there to sunbathe – all very
civilised with changing rooms, showers and food and drinks service – and it was great to swim in the sea when it got too hot. There are metal ladders down into the sea and a pontoon to swim
to and sunbathe on – fab!

We liked that the hotel is only a 20 minute walk into Funchal so we did that a few times – it’s a pretty little place and nice to wander round the shops etc. We also took the cable car up to the
botanical gardens and then a toboggan down – brilliant fun although not for the faint hearted!

Go – you will love Reid’s – it’s beyond charming and I for one can’t wait to go back.

We stayed at Reid's Palace for a week in September following a recommendation from a friend who has visited the hotel regularly. If you are looking for a special hotel with superb customer service this is the hotel for you. The personal attention provided by Mr Campus, the hotel manager was exceptional. He went out of his way to ensure our stay was perfect.

The facilities at the hotel cater for all, the pools are of an exceptional quality in terms of cleanliness and the pool staff will provide you with individual attention e.g moving of sunbeds, parasols, provision of towels etc. The lift to the sea and sun decks only adds to the enjoyment of your stay.

Rooms differ in terms of views, size and facilities so ensure you speak with customer services if you have any specific requirement.

The interior of the hotel is impressive and very comfortable with evening entertainment provided.
The grounds and gardens of the hotel are lovely however there are a lot of steps and may limit the access for those with limited mobility.

Room Tip: Ask for high level rooms e.g level 7 and best view of sea is above main garden e.g, 766. The preside...

A charming hotel stuck beautifully in a bygone era. The front of the hotel is deceptive as it
doesn't look that impressive but once inside the hotel it is perfectly maintained with the most professional courteous staff. The breakfast buffet is extensive and the service is outstanding Afternoon tea is perfect and the evening service in both the on site restaurants is as good as you could hope for.

Will definitely return. Not sure but this might not be the best destination for young families but this would appeal mainly to older clients.

Room Tip: Worth getting an ocean view room.

We went to Reid's Palace for a long weekend in August. The hotel is beautiful & the rooms well appointed. The staff were fabulous - from the pool boys who would put your longer just where you wanted it and bring fresh towels after a swim, to the cleaning lady with her lovely smile - nothing was too much trouble. We ate in two of the restaurants and the food was exceptional, including at breakfast where the daily special was freshly cooked and the juices freshly squeezed. The cocktail bar had a pianist and singer into the early hours, and a balcony with fabulous views out to sea.The best part for me was the bracing morning swim in the sea - a lift (or staircase) takes you down to the waters edge where there is a seawater pool, diving boards into the sea and a platform to swim out to. I would recommend this hotel to adults and couples - whilst there were a few families at the hotel when we were there and they were made to feel very welcome it's really more suitable for adults. Worth noting that this is not a budget option, but it does deliver excelent value for money.

We were thoroughly impressed with everything at Reid's Palace. Before we arrived, we received a complete list of activities either sponsored by the hotel or in partnership with a vendor. Isabel the Concierge helped us with everything in advance and most impressive was that she remembered everything we had scheduled. The views from the hotel are spectacular and the easy access to the ocean is fantastic. The water was a bit chilly but you could easily find a sunny spot along the path that leads to the ocean. We attended the Tuesday night buffet by the pool and felt the offerings were wonderful - Portuguese favorites and many things we had not tried before. I would especially recommend trying ALL the Portuguese cheeses. The evening also included entertainment with traditional music and dancing that was a lot of fun - and the audience can participate too! My opinion is that this is a property for a more mature clientele - I am sure families could find many things to do but dining is formal (no shorts please) and so anyone considering a trip should factor that in. For us - it was perfect and everyone on the staff was attentive and went out of their way. We spoke with many people who had been there in excess of 30 years! All in all - we are so pleased with our decision to visit Madeira and Reid's made it extra special.

Leon and Sally. This was our second visit to Reids, our first being 2011.From being met at the airport, to the handshake from Matos the concierge on leaving, everything was impeccable. The service and the attention to detail that all staff deliver is a credit to Reids. The place is charming, being able to find a quiet spot in the lovely tended gardens is a piece of heaven. We are both keen swimmers and the straight forward heated saltwater pool was superbly clean, and a joy to swim in.Special thanks to Joanne who helped us out with a couple of trips,I think you really deserve a better office to reflect the excellent service you provide, and a hello to Cindy the lovely smiling breakfast waitress.Looking forward to another visit.

Very elegant hotel. Superb service and almost surreal location. Afternoon terrace tea is quite an experience in itself leaving London's Ritz Tea second best. Selection of restaurants is somewhat limited, although Villa Cipriani is quite divine thanks to its views, service and chef.
