“Very hard to fault”

This really is an old-style luxury hotel with none of the stuffiness you might find in similar ones. Every member of staff we met was friendly and helpful. The pool area has a wonderful outlook over the sea. We didn't pay for an upgrade, just opting for the standard 'Charming' room. We were given 728, which is certainly not large but beautifully appointed, with room for both cases. It has two lovely armchairs looking out through the French doors, but it has has to be said, we found them 'snug' - and we're not large! The bathroom is also lovely. However, the really fantastic thing about this room (and the one next door 730) is that it has an amazing terrace, which is bigger than the room. It faces east so is bathed in morning sun, which makes it is possible to spend the morning sitting there enjoying the view over the harbour where the cruise ships are berthed.
If I were to make a criticism it would be that the Afternoon Tea is not good value if you are staying in the hotel. If you are not, then you do get the opportunity to see at least some of the lovely public rooms and sit on the famous balcony. However, the lucky guests can do this all the time.
We didn't notice much formal wear around although the older guests were less casually dressed for breakfast than you might expect.
I do hope this hotel is successful in attracting the younger age groups to keep the tradition of staying at this historic hotel alive for many more years.

We go to Reids every July for 14 nights, and have the same room. Everything is just right. The staff are freindly & helpful.

The main dining room (jacket required) is magnificent. The open air restaurant Brisa do Mar is on a high cliff overlooking the Atlanic, Funchal Bay and fantastic sights of Funchal. The breakfast in the Garden Room Restuarant with massive windows has an excellent choice with every imaginable item you could want, buffet style + options cooked to order. The only negative in the whole of Reids is the awful sausages for Breakfast, and Mainland Europeans putting towels on loungers before 8 am (can you guess which Nationalty most of them are ...?). The good thing is, the pool attendants move the towels if they are there for very long. The pool atendants move the loungers for you and change the position of the sun shades as the sun moves round. The Pool Side restaurant has a fantastc Dinner buffet on a Saturday. The Villa Cipriani, an Italian themed restaurant, next to Reids, is built on the cliffs. The Afternoon Teas on the Balcony are legendary, sandwices, cakes, scones. Choose the Great Affordables package, which includes 3 Dinners + an afternoon tea per week of stay. The other days, you can go to some of the fantasic restaurants where the locals eat, the specialites being Espada and Espetada.

We are going again this year.

If you like noisy brash places, then stay away from Madeira. There are some truly dreadful hotels on Madeira, especially to the West of Funchal. As Sir Henry Royce of Rolls-Royce said, "The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten", = "You get what you pay for".

Driving a hire car around the Island is easy, much better than mainland Europe, the locals drive well.

The conclusion - If you like great qualty in beatiful surroundis and freindly but unobsequis staff, then go to Madeira and stay at Reid's Palace.

Room Tip: All the rooms aree excellent and overlook the sea.

We stayed nearby at The Cliff Bay (regrettably...). One cannot help notice the immediate difference in the standard of service at Reid´s as opposed to most other places in Funchal. Let´s start with the bar: everyone is extremely and genuinely polished, yet warm and welcoming. This was true of the both the dashing bartender who made us killer cocktail after killer cocktail (started with Singapore Slings, which were out of this world, followed by a recommended gin-based specialty of the house, also excellent) and the charming waitstaff. We were persuaded to order a few appetizers from the bar menu (salad and the satay chicken - both delicious). A jazz quartet played whose lead vocalist could easily be Funchal´s very own Frank Sinatra impersonator, vocally speaking. As for the high tea -- it´s just a delightful, uber-civilized affair from start to finish and Reid´s does it very well with a good selection of teas and generous second servings of finger sandwiches and fresh baked scones. A bit of luxury not to be missed while in Funchal.

I brought my 86 year old Father here for a week at Easter. The hotel itself and the gardens are beautiful and elegant (without being stuffy), but it is the staff and service that make the hotel really exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel very valued. Our room was beautiful, had a large terrace with a sea view, and was serviced very discretely twice a day.
The breakfast menu was extensive with omlettes cooked to order, a hot and cold buffet and wonder fresh fruit and fruit juices (and even champagne). We ate in 2 of the restaurants (Villa Cipriani and Les Faunes) Food and service were super in both. The view of Funchal from Les Faunes is simply stunning.
The excursions organised by the hotel were excellent and the guide really knew her stuff, especially in the Botanic Gardens. Waterproofs were provided by the hotel when the weather looked as though rain was on its way.
The only slight negative was afternoon tea on the terrace. This surprised me as it is one of the things the hotel is famous for. Service was not up to the standards elsewhere (staff seemed more interested in clearing empty tables than serving occupied tables) and the food was nothing special. In particular, it seemed odd that 3 scones were served for 2 people.
I will definately return for, as one guide book said, "Reid's itself is a destination".

Reids Palace is understated luxury. Excellent service with a friendly face.
We went here to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and what a treat. The hotel is full of little treasures: old photographs of the hotel from a bygone age and of famous visitors. Our (Superior) room was huge and well appointed and our balcony looked out over the lights of the city and the sea. The public rooms were full of charm and character, with beautiful flower arrangements everywhere. Whether you want to use it as a base for exploring the island or just relax all day by one of the pools, it's a lovely place to stay. We stayed for a week and enjoyed every minute. We could quibble about the price of the snacks in the minibar, but we've seen worse.

Room Tip: Most of the rooms have a sea view, but rooms on the higher floors overlooking the garden probably ha...

My husband and I stayed at Reids Palace for a week in March the staff, food and ambience was exceptional and would certainly visit in the future.
The only slightly negative observation we had was the poor quality of the television in our room, which we pointed out in our questionnaire, to which we had a positive response when we returned home.

Was staying the the Cliff Bay next door and went to Reid's for pre-dinner cocktails one evening. Extensive drinks list and chose a Mojito ... good decision, was delicious. Needless to say one led to several others and decided to stay put on the covered terrace for dinner. Beatutiful view of the sunset and although it got very wet later on, not a drop of rain reached us and it was lovely looking at the lights of Funchal twinkling through the rain.
