“Quality remembered long after the price is forgotten...”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

I had stayed at Reids a couple of times previously , but not for some years. Went for a 4 day weekend break. It has actually improved and it was pretty good before. The staff are warm and friendly and if it's forced, then it's very well rehearsed or hidden. On arrival @ 10.00a.m. ..red-eye flight ..we were allowed to check into our room several hours before we were entitled to. We were also treated to complimentary coffee and tea on the terrace, whilst they finished the room off. The clifftop setting is spectacular and beautiful. The hotel oozes grace, history and charm. Sea swimming ,Atlantic Ocean permitting, is achievable off the lower deck accessed by lift or stairs. There's also a sea water pool at lower deck level, which doesn't look all that inviting, but was actually very safe and good fun. The room which was one or two rungs up the Reids chain supposedly had a partial seaview, our view was full on . The bacony was a tight fit, but served its purpose. The room was immensley comfortable, adequately spacious, clean and the complimentary soft drinks from the mini-bar plentiful. The bed was truly mammoth and comfy. The quality of bedding, dressing gowns, towels and toiletries in the room, nothing short of luxurious. The breakfast buffet was the best I have ever had, and the Oberoi run Hotel we stayed at in the Himalayas two years ago, I thought would never be bettered, it was here! Poolside snacks are fine, steak sandwiches or other options delivered to you lounger or eaten in the open plan dining area. Not cheap, but probably value for the money paid. Had dinner in their Villa Cipriani restaurant on the verandah..see separate review, in summary excellent. The poolside or cliff side decking options mean you can relax in a range of situations and you are pampered by the pool staff. The same staff have been doing it for years, so they know how to look after you. We were going to try the reknowned afternoon tea on the terrace, but we were too busy relaxing. On our departure day we were allowed to keep our room until mid afternoon at no charge, and this allowed us to enjoy every last minute. I think it's operating at a really superior level. I'm reasonably well travelled and not that easily pleased, so if I say this equals the best I've stayed at, be assured it's very good indeed. If you want to combine this with a visit to the best value and quality of restaurants, visit 'Tokos' very nearby...eccentric, but it is the best, or a cheaper option, but also very good Casal De Panho, just down the hill towards town..

Room Tip: 8th floor sea-view.

We visited here for the first time last weekend, we had never been to Madeira before, were only 1.5 hrs away by plane as we live on Gran Canaria...For those who have never visited Funchal before, it is a beautiful place and well worth the visit.

First impressions of this hotel are excellent, and it is a beautiful hotel set in a beautiful location, probably the best location on the island. We ate in two of their restaurants while we were there, the French one and also the Italian, both were excellent, especially the Italian set up on the cliffside with just the best views....The Cocktail bar is also such a quality place to relax with a drink and admire the scenery...just awsome.
We also treated ourselves to a massage in the Spa which was of high quality.....

The staff working inside the hotel are all very friendly...but the Welcoming inside is not followed by those working outside around the pool area's....not that their unfriendly it's just that their not as welcoming.....
The breakfast buffet we felt could be improved also...While it is pleasant, we felt that it was generally below standard of what you would expect from a hotel of this standard. Food selection was o.k. but nothing special. Indeed my partner ordered the daily special, but it really was nothing special !...I have eaten 5* breakfasts in other quality hotels that offer a superior service to this one.....please note this is not a complaint, just an observation!
All in all we had a lovely break in this wonderful hotel and in this beautiful city and we would stay here again......So thank you Reid's for making our holiday Special.......hope to see you again soon....

Room Tip: We went for a superior room and had fantastic views of both funchal and the ocean.

Felt like I was in the beginning of the 20th century, when people would stay in beautiful hotels for weeks!
The hotel is beautiful and historical, the staff is so welcoming, nice , professional and helpful!
The guests where quiet and polite.
It was a perfect overnight!
It's not a cheap hotel, but you know when you don't even think about how much you're spending because it's so totally worth it?
It's a real treat to stay there even for just one night, and frankly I can't wait for an opportunity to go back.
The sea deck is wonderful, you feel like you're diving from a boat in the middle of the ocean, and we even saw a friendly sea lion!
We stayed in a suite and the view from the sea was breathtaking, and the room itself just gorgeous. We had the best time and totally recommend!

Room Tip: The suites are beautiful!!

From the moment you arrive at the hotel you are made most welcome, the staff in general are all pleasant and attentive, making every effort to accomodate your requests and to make your stay a pleasant one - and this visit was no exception.

Remarkably (for TAP that is) our morning flight from Gatwick was not only on time - it was early (now there's a first !) with our bags quickly off the carousel we were at Reid's by no later than 11.00am - We really didn't expect the room to be ready, but within 30 minutes we had been taken to our room - that's service !.

Our room was all we could ask for with magnificent views over Funchal, clean and very well equiped - we had no reason to complain at all.

We dined at the Saturday Buffet and would recommend this to all visitors, The buffet was superb, the service 5 Star, the wines were excellent and the band very good - we had a very agreable first evening.

Breakfast on the Sunday and Monday were all presented and served well, with no reason for any complaint. We dined in the Briso Do Mar and Villa Capriani and received superb service and most acceptable cuisine.

But - and here's the rub - we simply could not understand how the breakfast service went from pretty much perfect (in our opinion) to worse than you would expect in a motorway cafe in the UK.

The food was to the same exceptional standard, with the chef and his staff ensuring that the buffet was replenished and maintained to very high standards. Unfortunately the waiting staff completely lost the plot.

Upon our arrival in the breakfast room we were left hoping to be escorted to a table - no chance - and when we had seated ourselves we had an unacceptably long wait to be asked if we would like tea or coffee, let alone be offered any fresh orange juice. On more than one occasion we had to draw the Managers attention to the fact that we had not received our beverages (and we aren't being picky here - we had waited a good 25/30 minutes) and that our cereal plates had not been removed. (more than once we had to move the plates onto adjacent tables, where they remained whilst the male waiters/managers walked by ignoring them). The only ones that seemed to be doing the work were the two girls, who were Trojans and really tried to keep the place going.

For the life of us we cannot understand this and it left a large blemish on an otherwise faultless performance by the hotel and its staff. Staff in all other areas provided excellent service and we have absolutely no reason for any complaints - it was just the breakfast room.

This is the reason why we have not awarded 5 stars in some areas and yes - we did note this on our departure survey with full name address etc . There is always room for improvement and the General Manager would do well to take a look at the performance of some of his Food and Beverage managers (we noted that this was the only factor that had changed during this time.)

Yes - we agree - you "get what you give" - and we asked ourselves "did we offend somebody or do something that would result in such behaviour?" and we honestly cannot think of anything that would have had such an impact, possibly sitting in an area that hadn't been allocated to a specific waiter ?? - who knows - in a 5 Star hotel this shouldn't be an issue in any case.

We would not let this detract from our overall experience and we would be back to stay in a heartbeat !!

Room Tip: They are all good.

Dear Guest,

Many thanks for your kind contribution and honest opinion.

I am glad to read that in general you did like the service, cullinary level and the hospitality we deliver. It is anyhow with great regret that I read the episode at breakfast, as it should not happen for sure, in such a establishment. Please do not feel that something wrong was made from your side, it seems that we had a one off unfortunate situation, that we have not been able to cope with, and consequently with the service not being provided at the level. I apologize for it and hope that the good memories will prevail.

Your comments will also help to address any future situations and for the constant training we do. We are not for sure perfect, although we would continually strive for it.

I look forward to your next visit.

With best regards from the island of flowers and eternal Spring.

This week, we fulfilled the promise we made in the 1980'so return to Reid's. Madeira has changed after spending the euro millions on roads and bridges, but Reid's is essentially as we left it.
OK, there are new buildings, new pools, and other improvements, but many of the staff and some of the furniture are still here!
95% of the guests are loyal regulars, returning year on year to sample the charm and personal service that sets it apart from any other 5* establishment on offer to visitors to Funchal.
Throughout the hotel we keep hearing this phrase spoken by staff and guests alike: "Oh, it's so lovely to see you again!"
Reid's, we entirely agree.

Beautiful and historic hotel with immaculate service and features. A relaxing and beautiful garden and seaside bathing platforms down at the sea. The view over the harbour of Funchal is great. Historic teatime and exhibition of old picures from the history of the hotel and vincinity. Rooms are individual but not so large, get one with balcony. Had a romantic and splendid time and specially the champagne dinner.

Room Tip: get a room with a view and balcony.
