“Disappointing...”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

We stayed in Funchal last July and again in May this year. On both occasions we ate here and were very impressed. The food, ambience and service were excellent. However, we have just returned from a 10 day stay and couldn't wait to visit again but, unfortunately, we were very disappointed. On every previous visit we were greeted at the entrance to the restaurant and handed a small glass of Madeira wine. Not so on this occasion. The restaurant was very busy but instead of being told this, we were taken to a table tucked away at the side of the establishment with dirty tablecloths and broken glass, debris under the table. We asked to be moved, which the waitress didn't appreciate. She moved us to a better table when one became free but not with good grace. The food was as good as before but was spoilt by the slow service and our drinks being forgotten. All in all, a big let down, particularly as this is not a cheap place to eat!

“Excellent food and service!”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

Greeted by the nicest doorman ever! He is very friendly and not pushy at all. Also, he gives you a complementary glass of wine, which is great. The staff are all helpful and very friendly, definitely the friendliness staff we met in Funchal. The outside seating area is beautiful! And the food is delicious too. Do not have a single bad word for this restaurant! Unfortunately we only found this restaurant towards the end of our holiday, but we still visited twice. The steak on the stone was lovely, the onion soup extremely tasty, and the Madeira style scabbard was absolutely delicious.

“lovely”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

Just down the road from our hotel was a bar/restaurant that served a lovely cup of cappuccino (lots of cream) on the last night we decided to try the food there and we were gutted we hadn't beforehand.
We shared a lovely Chateaubriand and had a lovely couple of brandys' afterwards. The Ladies serving us were totally focused on service but also joining in with our jokes and laughter. I would recommend the cappuccino but also do not miss the food like we did until our last night.

“O Dragoeiro”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

Madeira - 22/07/2013 - 20:00 - O DRAGOEIRO - Restaurant & Cocktail Bar ...
Rua da Casa Branca, No 43, Funchal ...

Classy looking terrassed (2 levels + 1 more level separate from the main restaurant) restaurant, lots of plants tall and short.

1st Visit
I had the set menu (Menu Turistica) for 15 Euros and paid a little extra for a Cappuccino, an Espresso and a large bottle of sparkling mineral water.

Starter - Vegetable soup - this was really tasty and needed neither salt or pepper to pep up the taste ...

Main - Grilled Squid (obligatory slice of lemon was there too) with a side plate of vegetables; Potatoes, Carrots, peas, beans and I believe boiled courgette. The Squid were mouth-sized, not chewy (like rubber), very nicely grilled and tasted as they should - fresh ...

Dessert - Caramel Pudding - What's there to say, other than a wonderful end to an all in all good meal ...

2nd Visit
I had the set menu (Menu Turistica) and ordered vegetarian for 15 Euros and paid a little extra for a Cappuccino, an Espresso and two small bottles of sparkling mineral water.

Starter – Avocado Vinaigrette composed of half an Avocado with finely chopped carrot, beetroot, lettuce and slices of orange and lemon, adding a little wine vinegar and olive oil, salt and pepper. It was very pleasant and just the right food for a still very warm evening.

Main – Vegetable Quiche – not quite what I was expecting but the Quiche had been made individually, seemingly in a small bowl, a mixture of cheese, eggs, potatoes, carrots, peas etc. I did find it a little bland but after adding pepper and salt found it pleasantly palatable …

Dessert - Caramel Pudding, again - What's there to say, still a good meal …

Would I recommend it? Yes... the man at the front reeling the customers in, the waitresses and waiters were all very polite and forthcoming, if I had to wait, then it was because this restaurant gets very busy around the time I visited ... So please, have a little patience. After all they have a hard job as it is ... and contrary to popular belief ... they really don't earn that great a living ... not even from the "generous" tourists ...

I paid Euro (1st Visit) 25.80 and (2nd Visit) Euro 23.70 for the whole meal + about 10% tip. My rating ****
