We thought we would give this nice looking restaurant a try on a recent trip to Funchal as it was New Year's Day and our planned visit to the L'Osteria just up the hill was curtailed due to it being closed for the holiday. The setting for O Drageiro was pleasant enough with plenty of outside seating and away from traffic fumes. Front of house service was efficient. We each ordered a different special of the day and were surprised that it took about 3/4 of an hour to get served once we had ordered.
As the evening was getting cool we moved from sitting outside to inside. The inside of the building was most disappointing, being dull and soulless. When the food came there was nothing "special" about it including the presentation! My chicken was dry and over cooked and my wife's filleted sea bass had plenty of bones remaining.
We have had many better meals in the area for a similar cost and will in future not stop by on our way up the hill preferring to eat at the L'Ostreria about 50 m further on where we have never had a complaint about the speed or quality of food and service and after many visits it remains one of our medium budget favourites.
