We thought we would give this nice looking restaurant a try on a recent trip to Funchal as it was New Year's Day and our planned visit to the L'Osteria just up the hill was curtailed due to it being closed for the holiday. The setting for O Drageiro was pleasant enough with plenty of outside seating and away from traffic fumes. Front of house service was efficient. We each ordered a different special of the day and were surprised that it took about 3/4 of an hour to get served once we had ordered.
As the evening was getting cool we moved from sitting outside to inside. The inside of the building was most disappointing, being dull and soulless. When the food came there was nothing "special" about it including the presentation! My chicken was dry and over cooked and my wife's filleted sea bass had plenty of bones remaining.
We have had many better meals in the area for a similar cost and will in future not stop by on our way up the hill preferring to eat at the L'Ostreria about 50 m further on where we have never had a complaint about the speed or quality of food and service and after many visits it remains one of our medium budget favourites.

The character on the door who i assume is "Mr Smith" tells a good tale that is backed up by the dining experience.

Definitely worth a visit.

From the moment we were greeted by the smiling "Mr. Smith" and shown to our table this was definitely THE best dining experience we had on Madeira.
Excellent helpful and courteous staff, immaculately clean and wonderful surroundings. really lovely wines and then the food!
Well, the food was simply but beautifully cooked and presented. A great menu with great variety of fish but their "steak on a stone" was the most succulent, tender meat I've ever had.
This restaurant made our trip to Madeira very special indeed.
I can heartily recommend it to anyone, you won't be disappointed!

The first thing you notice about this restaurant is the big old black guy welcoming people in at the gate. He is such a lovely character. The restaurant is opposite Solar da Ajuda and has good food, great house wine and excellent service, all at a very good price. You will notice that they have a lot of waitresses, so that is why service is so good.

We have been coming to Madeira for 9 years and this restaurant never fails to give you a great meal. The "steak on the stone" is fantastic. You are greeted by Smith who every year keeps my children entertained as to what colour his jacket will be! The staff are very friendly and we love this restaurant. Don't think we have ever had a bad meal here. Well worth a visit.
