We found this little gem looking for a place to have a lunch, early December, low season. Indeed, as one of the previous comments says, it needs some efforts to bring more clients: to pait the walls of surroundings buildings, maybe new tablecloths of more fancy cutlery or more lighting. We ate in the garden, so we haven't see the inside part. But this restaurant has for us several very important strong points:
~ the inside garden is beautiful and well kept, quite unexpected from the street
~ the waiters and very nice, efficient and discreet, no pressure at all
~ the food ~ our reason to visit this place ~ was very good. We had 2 different tipical soups and the tomatoe sup was great. Also we had peixe espada preta madeiran style, with thick salsa, and we liked this recipe for famous black scabbardfish best from all we've tried before
~ It's just in the center of Funchal
~ the price was more than rasonable, main dish costs 7/8 euros and the same quality at the marina you have for 12 euros, salads are for 4/5 euros soups for 1,5/3 euros, they have nice desserts

Probably the best time to go to dine there is summer. We will visit Jardim da Carreira at our next time at Madeira, best wishes to them! ;)

This place looks like it is on its last legs. We were invited in from the street and went through an empty restaurant to a back room which resembled a delapidated conservatory. We were sitting facing a concrete toilet block and wondering at the number of exposed wires particularly as it was raining heavily. The food was terrrible and the standards of cleanliness were not the greatest. We felt sorry for the waitresses and so were too polite to leave which in retrospect we should have. This is clearly a place in trouble financially and organisationally. I would not recommend going any where near it.

We visit Funchal each year, and this is always on our list. I like to finish the holiday with a good meal at a sensible price in this restaurant. The service is always good and friendly, and the food is beautifully cooked. I recommend the mixed fish grill with prawn. It's a selection of about 4 moderate sized fish steaks, 1 large langoustine, and several really savoury tasting grilled squid. It's a large and filling meal, but really tasty for around 12 euros. It's more of a courtyard than a garden at the back, but a pleasant place to sit and eat. It's very popular with Madeirans, who lunch there while shopping. The fixed menus are excellent value too, at around 9 euros, and include soup, main course, desert and coffee. This is Portuguese cooking at it's best, with no airs and graces. It's centrally located, being 3 minutes walk from the municipal gardens, right in the middle of town.

Our first trip to Funchal for 8 years. Not a lot has changed except that there are more big hotels, more restaurants and the existing ones from 8 years ago have more tables. This one is tucked away behind the Rua da Carreira and is in the garden of the property. The food is good, the service is good and the staff friendly. Not expensive and no complaints.

We were just walking past and my husband spied the garden at the back. Stopped for a quick lunch and it was amazing. My husband had the sword fish & said it was the best he'd has so far. I has the squids on a skewer, gorgeous. The service was quick and the staff very pleasant. We have already eaten in nos 1 & 2 on trip advisor, and we rate here just as highly, we will definitely return as the price and quality of food is amazing
