“A must see place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2012 via mobile

Food was just averige local but that wasn't the main issue here. We popped by and noticed that Loundres was the only place with queue in front of it. We waited almost an hour to get in (it was new years eve), but the whole queuing was a very entertaining happening. At first it seemed that people got in in some random order but there was some regular customers or local with a reservation. It just ment that they were taken first. All the time the staff noticed all and kept people happy.

The service was exellent and both the customers and staff seemed to have a good time. The atmosphere was lively and noisy. You got a tap in your shoulder in a once and a while by passing waiter. Most of the staff speak enough english.

When leaving they wanted to shake your hand or give you a tap on your shoulder - or even a hug.

Exellent place to start new years eve celebration.

“Nice people, pity about the food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2012

The staff in this restaurant are charming: friendly, considerate, helpful, generous, homely. This is nice to have, but it doesn't really make up for the blandness of the the food or its poor presentation. The emphasis is all on quantity: huge plates with huge portions all piled up together, then topped up incrementally with unasked for extras! None of our party of four could eat half of what was on their plates. Nor did they really want to. It didn't seem worth the effort to keep shovelling it in.

To judge by the size and shape of the native Madeirans, few were in need of a big meal. Likewise the tourists off the cruise ships. And there certainly weren't many hungry backpackers around. So why so much food? Less would be, or could be, more.

“Proper food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 23, 2012

It is always a good thing if the locals eat in a place and you have to wait to get in - this restaurant is full, busy, entertaining and the food is good too!

“Made very welcome, too MUCH food...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2012

We´ve been coming to madeira for a number of years but had always walked past this restaurant. How wrong we were not to look in. It was the Trip Advisor advert in their window that did it, we had been out all evening taking in the Christmas lights and were hungry. We were welcomed in very warmly and shown to our table.

My wife had heard someone saying that the portions here were large - they were absolutely right. After an enormous bowl of delicious soup, we decided to share a portion of jewel fish between us. There was enough for 3 people and we ended up finishing the fish but leaving a fair bit of the veg. After letting the soup and main course settle for a while, all we could mange for deserts were a fruit salad and for myself, a creme caramel.

Absolutely recommend 100%, good food at reasonable prices with excellent service.

“Honest local restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 15, 2012 via mobile

My girlfriend and me agreed that the best way to describe this place is honesty. Nothing pretentious or fony about this place. Very good scabbard, but the tuna was a bit overcooked for a Danish taste. Good service, but the atmosphere would be better if they changed the light a bit.
