We've visited Casa Velha on previous trips to Madeira and it is excellent. Having not visited for several years my husband and I didn't really remember the layout when his parents suggested we eat there on our last night in Madeira, this trip with our eight month old daughter. We had forgotten there was a flight of stairs up to the restaurant, after we walked from our hotel with a stroller. We also didn't remember the bathrooms were a flight downstairs, and no changing table. Despite those things, the staff was fantastic, they did have a highchair and the hostess was lovely to set up a cushion in the ladies room as a makeshift changing table. We made a reservation super early in an attempt to have a nice dinner before the baby got too tired and to try not to disturb other diners at what it a very romantic dinner site. Despite our best efforts my husband, daughter and I left immediately after the main course, leaving the inlaws and another couple to enjoy dessert and the rest of the evening. The food was delicous and service was wonderful, just not a place for kids of any age. Next trip, we will leave the baby with a sitter and have a nice quiet romantic dinner, just the two of us.

A family member had recommended this restaurant. Unfortunately we only got round to trying the restaurant on our last night. The food was excellent. Well worth a visit .

We visited this restaurant once for evening meal and twice for lunch.
The food was good, both in the evening and during lunch-time (check-out the daily specials, chef's soup and salad were excellent) and do not forget the Madeira-bread, it is simply delicious.

We have visited this restaurant several times over the last 10 years and it has always come up to expectations.
The food is high quality traditional European/Portuguese. It does have a higher than average price tag. Not excessive but it does reflect the quality of the food and the setting.
Guidance on the wine and food is friendly and knowledgeable, and the staff seem to have a knack of sensing what it is you want and therefore what to recommend.
You will usually need to book as it is popular although a little off the beaten track.
If you want somewhere for a special occasion whether it be family at a birthday or perhaps romantic, the Casa Velha (Old House) will always come up trumps.

We have been coming to this restaurant and it's sister Dona Amelia just along the road for the last 19 years. I'm sure most of the waiters are still same! It's like stepping back into old colonial times, polite and friendly service and cleanliness and importantly good food. We went back this years and ate on the ground floor terrace, nice and airy on a hot night...I had the old favourite of meat kebab whilst my wife had chicken. Both were cooked perfectly and came with a selection of fresh veg - long are the days when all vegetables were served boiled to a pulp! Don't think the portions appear small when they arrive, the meals are filling even without a starter....Dona Amelia along the street has the same standards and layout, both have lovely first floor areas which you can look out and onto the surrounding terrace etc. Why there is a 4 euro price difference between restaurants for the chateaubriand even the chefs do not know.! Enjoy!
