Tokos
Run by an eccentric Russian chef/owner, this is at the top end of food (in both quality and price) in the Funchal area. He can be charming or rude to both clients and staff. Some people clearly find this endearing. I don’t.
The restaurant is small and in a quiet, calmly run establishment could be ‘intimate’, but the noise of the kitchen - and a spat between him and staff (for which he was entirely to blame) made it, frankly, difficult to enjoy the food as it deserved to be enjoyed.
The antics of a Marcus Waring/ Gordon Ramsey may make interesting TV as part of a ‘reality show’ of sorts, but I expect, as the client to have peace and calm when eating!

In comparison to other very good Madeira restaurants , such as Restaurante do Forte and Armazem do Sal, the food here is poor. The sauces are a particular weakness, being crude and over-powering.

Prices are about 30% higher than in comparable restaurants and the entertaining nature of the owner/chef did not make up for a disappointing evening.

Tokos is worth to visit, because atmosphere is nice and humorousness. There was plenty o f food to eat but precises were a little bit too high. Before Christmas they had reduced some prices (apetizers two for one, but just appetizer were clearly overpriced). And 10 % discount if payed cash (how about taxes?)!

Having read very positive reviews about this restaurant we (me and my wife) were rather disappointed. We've visited restaurants from kebab stands to Michelin starred fine dining and generally the price-quality ratio feels pretty ok. Not so with Tokos.

The prices ranged from high to exorbitant but the dishes were not correspondingly well prepared. Most had some overpowering ingredient and the combinations of tastes were not well balanced.

The chef/cook is certainly a personality but this unfortunately does not cover for the culinary shortcomings.
