Just spent a wonderful week in Madeira and dined in Restuarante a Bica on every night except Sunday - closed - simple local Madeiran dishes cooked beautifully and served with care. Waiters all speak most european languages well - French, German, English, Portuguese, Spanish - many a pleasant hour sat chatting to the owners who love to do the same.

Prices were cheap, considering the value - typical cost of 3 course meal consisting of - garlic bread, wonderful soup, main course of fish / meat with fresh vegetables, bottled water was 25 euros. They also make their own icecreams - well, well worth a try.

They are based on the Rua do Hospital Velho, to the left side of the old food market as you face it at the east end of the promenade.

If you prize good home-made cooking and a friendly atmosphere then this is good.

They also serve lunche time meals but we didnt try them.

What is so good about this Restaurant is that it is high quality simple food cooked to perfection. It was so good we ate there twice. The Soups I had were tasty, fresh, filling and immediately made me feel better. The ultra-fresh fish my wife had on both occasions was grilled to perfection. This was the best fish we have eaten, anywhere! The Garlic bread was also the best of all the restaurants we ate in. Portions were large with plenty to eat. The Green wine was slightly fizzy, refreshing and accompanied the fish very well. The price of the meal was very reasonable. The Restaurant and kitchen was spotless and the owner welcomed us warmly as if he was welcoming us into his own home. The only criticism is that it is a very bright restaurant to sit in, but then again you can see exactly what you are eating and how clean the place is… I highly recommend this restaurant. Five stars.

We have been twice to this restaurant, once for lunch and once for diner. You won't see the restaurant room from the street, but don't hesitate, go downstairs ! At lunch, there are mostly local people, and they will propose some meals which are not on the menu, just a list in Portuguese. These are Portuguese stews, cheap and excellent. You will have the choice between half and full portion, and except if you are really hungry, half portion is sufficient. In the evening, they offer only the standard menu, but again very good and fresh food.

We visited this typical Portugese restaurant last year and enjoyed it so much it was one of our first ports of call when we returned this week. It was every bit as good and this time we went in the evening when it was much quieter. Lunchtime can be quite frantic but fun all the same ! I had the scabbard tropical which was delicious. The side dishes are plentiful and large so go with a good appetite There are boiled potatoes, chips , rice, maize and green vegetables. We shared a bolo de caco ( excellent ) to start with and that, with the main course , was plenty ! The owners are very friendly and helpful..
