Description: The Casa Portuguesa was established in the year 2000 by Anabela Nunes who continues to run the restaurant with her family. The restaurant is small and intimate, located in one of the back streets in Funchal's Old Town, traditionally decorated with hand painted blue and white tiles, tables covered in hand made Madeiran table cloths and lit with tiny wall lights giving it warmth, character and an atmosphere of dining in a real Portuguese family home. We have a free pick-up service from hotels or apartments if required.

We found this restaurant by strange means. A guitarist playing at the Ritz during the day, handed out leaflets during breaks. He was playing at the Casa Portuguesa that evening, so we decided to go. They collected us from our hotel because we had booked in advance, which saved on taxi fares.

The restaurant was an absolute joy. Exceptionally clean inside, and really quaint. The service and food where exceptional, with the whole evening a memory we will return and enjoy on future visits to Funchal.

So, you are in Funchal and you are spoilt for choice for places to eat. If you can't decide then you will not go wrong by choosing Casa Portuguesa.
You will find this restaurant in the Old Town. Its a little off the main street so you might easily miss it.
They have live guitar music every night. It was a duet playing while I was there. Absolutely amazing guitar playing.
The menu is varied and caters for all. There is a bias towards fish dishes I felt.
They do a set menu too for about 40 euro. Main dishes are about 19 euro on average. So its not cheap. But then you are getting a lot for your money.
The food is delivered covered to the table and the waiters make a show of presenting it. And rightly so. The food is wonderful. Perfectly cooked and presented.
The decor in the restaurant is very nice too. Very old style Portuguese.
If you call or book, the restaurant will also pick you up and return you to your hotel. All complimentary.
This is a pretty restaurant that is well worth a visit.

Lovely small restaurant. They had two guitarist playing when we visited (twice) - they were very good and low key. Very friendly, excellent, professional waiters. The food was delicious - we tried the fish, lamb chops, fillet steak - all were served with fresh vegetables. We also enjoyed the sweets. Maybe a little bit more expensive than some other restaurant but you get what you pay for and we highly recommend it. We will be back on our next visit.

This is one of those restaurants for a special meal. It is not cheap, but well, go on, splash out! There is a courtesy car and we went on a Monday night when there were guitarists playing, which added to the atmosphere. It is just like being in someones home plus all the attention you want. The set menu is 35 Euros, but wonderful choices. We really enjoyed this restaurant in the Old Town.

We heard the guitar playing on a Sunday lunchtime outside the Ritz Cafe in central Funchal and during the break one of the guitarists brought round a flyer for this restaurant and we booked on the strength of the music which was fantastic and very varied. Casa Portuguesa will send a courtesy bus to your hotel in or around Funchal so it makes getting there and back easy so we booked up. When we arrived we found a really lovely homely place full of blue and white tiles, plates and great decor. They have a fixed price menu of 35 Euros for four courses (starter, main, sweet and coffee/tea) but you choose what you would like to eat from their a la carte menu e which includes a lovely fish soup and daily specials for starters and a reasonable choice of fish and meat options but they would accommodate vegetarians as well. I had the fillet steak with peppercorn sauce for my main dish and it literally melted in my mouth. Juan Caldarado lives, eats and breathes his music and his guitar - and his facial expressions as well as his playing make for a truly entertaining evening. His supporting guitarist has to simply pick up and work with him as he moved from tune to tune, often changing tempos mid flow. It was just a joy to hear and since the food was lovely too we soon booked to go back again before the end of our holiday. And yes I did have the fillet steak again, and it was just as good as the first time. Can highly recommend this restaurant for a really lovely evening out. Make a booking for around 7.30 so you don't miss any of the fun.
