We have visited this restaurant every year for the past five years and always receive a warm welcome. It is a small restaurant in the old part of the town with outside tables for good weather. We usually eat from their specials board and particularly enjoy their grilled sardines. We think that their chocolate mousse is the best on Madeira! A complimentary glass of madeira is always offered. The only downside is their inability to make a good capucchino coffee - far too strong! A two course specials meal for 2 with glasses of wine cost 28 euros. We look forward to our visit next year.

We have been going to O Portao for 10 years now and have never had a bad meal. It is our favourite restaurant in Funchal. The food is very good and the owner and his staff are lovely people and always most welcoming.

We ate at this restaurant twice during our recent visit to Funchal. This place is in an excellent position on a cobbled street in the Old Town area of Funchal and has plenty of seating outside on the street which is great for watching the world go by whilst you eat. On both of our visits the food was good and well presented. However, on our second visit the service was very slow. The waiter seemed to be more interested in chatting to a French couple that he appeared to know rather that serving the other diners. If it was not for this poor service we would have considered dining here on another occasion.

We were aiming for another restaurant that had been recommended to us but decided it looked too quiet. The menu for O Portao looked good and the excellence rating on this site persauded us to try it. Mistake!

We sat down with menus and quickly chose our meal; despite asking if we could place our order we waited 15 mins, whilst the only person who seemed "permitted" to take orders or bills dealt with everyone else. We then waited.....and slowly our drinks, and eventually our starters arrived, almost an hour after we'd sat down. After a further long wait our main courses arrived. The food was OK, far from the best we ate that week and not especially cheap.

In addition to the long wait, after asking for a coffee my husband was brought a white coffee.....nowhere else in Madeira had we ever just been handed a white coffee, the norm is black and one often has to ask for milk.

On eventually being given the bill (another wait) we were presented with 2 free drinks.....no suggestion of what they were, and a good restaurant would have noticed that only one of us was drinking alcohol. To add insult to injury they even came back again to offer us the same drinks!

I noticed a number of diners were given free drinks whilst waiting to order or when paying the bill, maybe this is how they get their good ratings?

as we visit madeira a couple of times a year we thought we would try somewhere different, and as this was ranked @ no9 decided to give it a try. what mistake! to say the food was bland and uninmaganitive is an understatement.my wife decided to have tuna salad so you can imagine our suprise when she was informed it was coming out of a tin and not fresh.the chef also managed to make sardines(an oily fish) dry and overcooked and serve them with a "salad"-actually 5 ingriedients dumped on the plate.perhaps they should try eating at the cafe museu to find out how to make a salad.to add insult to injury the bill was only eu15.00 cheaper than arazem do sal. one of the best restaurants on the island.
