The Vine hotel was virtually perfect. Excellent service, really clean and peaceful rooms and the breakfasts were fantastic. The hotel is right in the centre of town (but remember, Madeira is very sleepy, we're not talking central London, so it was mostly very quiet at night) and close enough to the coast that you can walk to the cafes and restaurants along the sea front.

The terrace is best designed for couples rather than children, as the pool is really relaxing but not a place to play or run about. The happy hour is really good (6pm to 8pm) and the cocktails (or G&T, sparkling wine etc) are excellent.

We saw some comments on here before we went about the hotel's design being too fancy. In our opinion, the artistic element enhanced our stay (if you want boring bog standard white-washed walls, go to the Holiday Inn, after all). Our only warning would be that if you are bashful, then the bathroom and bedroom are effectively 'open plan' (though obviously you can't see into the toilet cubicle). If you're having a bath, then expect to be visible from the bed! There was a tiny tiny glitch with the shower in room 311 too, which meant that water dribbled out from the door...but that's easily sorted.

All in all, an excellent stay.

If you like dramatic, modern boutique hotels, you'll love The Vine. There's simply nothing wrong with this place!

We stayed one week in April 2014. Got a warm welcome at the front desk followed by a tour of our room (a tutorial, actually, which was extremely useful for figuring out all the hidden drawers and technology tricks that make the lighting and automatic shades work)

The room: I'd classify our room (510) as extremely well-suited for romance. Separate shower, huge tub, smoked glass walls, and low lighting. Beautiful views from the wall of floor length windows looking east toward the city and sea. Some people might not like the pebble floors in shower and toilet area. I liked this feature. Another reviewer mentioned shower leaking. Ours didn't, so maybe this is a room-by-room issue.

The roof terrace/pool:
We loved it and hung out here even when it was cloudy. Wonderful ambiance, if you're into a modern gray/black/purple scheme. Drinks are expensive compared to other places, but the service is excellent, the view and seating is lovely, and the happy hour helps. We actually didn't order on the terrace outside of happy hour. The elevator style music was a bummer, but if that's the only complaint, that's not so bad. Original artists would be so much better than hearing the soft muzak covers.

Breakfast? If you end up wanting more or different than they provide, I'd be surprised. In addition to a giant buffet of...well, everything, they have what most breakfasts don't: pour your own champagne.

The staff was helpful and kind. The housekeeping was impeccable. The turn down service in the evening varied the treat every night....they also refolded towels, straightened up a bit, and otherwise made our lives very pleasant.

I will stay here again and again, since we loved Madeira. I simply don't see the point of staying anywhere else. Of course, I like the look and feel of the place, so if you're not into this sort of drama, it might not work for you.

Everything is designed for looks. Shower door leaks water out into the bedroom. Shower floor not sloping enough to let all the water out. Floors in shower and toilet areas are impractical - pebbles are difficult to keep hygienic! Toilet door did not close and could not be locked. Wardrobe door handles impossible to grab hold off. Electronic light system difficult to grasp in a weeks time. Lighting to dim for doing make-up. Confusing floor directions in lifts. Seating in the Spa Jacuzzi installed at wrong level to get immersed properly. The head of one of the showers in the Spa was position so close to the wall that it was difficult to get wet!! etc.
Apart from that, we had a nice stay and the huge plusses were the friendly and professional staff and the excellent breakfast. We also had fantastic walks and mini bus trips on the mountains which we booked directly with 'Lido Tours' in Funchal. Don't go with any other because you can't do better!

Room Tip: We had room 314 which was a delux corner room with limited views.

A very enjoyable trip with friendly staff plus the hotel was so comfortable, especially the bed. Interesting and pleasing décor - very modern and stylish. The bed turn down each evening was unusual s it was with a Werthers Original rather than a chocolate! Great location - in a shopping centre - but don't let that put you off as it's only the entrance and it is not noisy. Good facilities and lots of shops and eating places in shopping centre. Nice also having a supermarket close by which was very handy. The Spa was a bit disappointing - very dark and the water a bit cold. We didn't try the treatments but the staff were helpful.

I don't normally write reviews but we had a really good stay here. The views from a fifth floor room were fantastic. We stayed half board so used the restaurant each day and the staff there were excellent, very personable, professional yet good fun. We were there for Valentines night and the restaurant, with guitarist, was terrific. Coming out into a shopping mall was a little strange but it was very central for Funchal. The style was very modern but we liked it. All in all it was a superb break on a lovely island.

Room Tip: As high as possible.

Beautiful hotel with excellent service. Very unusual design hence being called a design hotel. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Hotel is situated in a shopping mall and is close to lots of eating places. Would love to go back.

Room Tip: Every floor has a theme to a different season but all are nice.

Enjoyed an excellent April week at the Vine with friends. We all enjoyed it but, to carp, we felt that in some areas comfort had been sacrificed in the pursuit of style. Where mood lighting in interior public areas might have suited some, I felt it was gloomy. The inside bar, near the reception area, was akin to an airport transit lounge with not even a scintilla of atmosphere. Perhaps that's why so few people used it. Room lighting was whacky but impressive. Under bed sensor lighting was an excellent innovation but was on a timer. So, if you got out of bed at night for a wee, you had to perform pretty sharpish or the light went out. However, all this paled into insignificance when you considered the magnificent terrace bar on top of the hotel, its standout feature. Flanked by an infinity pool down one side and a huge bubbling jacuzzi along another, the bar was superb with 360 degree views of Funchal. The staff were brill; friendly, knowledgeable, informative and smiling. Happy two hours from 6 to 8 was a great experience. The acid test: Would I go again? Yes!!!
