Modern hotel with clean lines and well kept exterior. No scramble for sunbeds as there were plenty for all with towels provided. Suites had their own sunbeds. Chill out areas on the upper levels. The reception is large and has marble flooring with soft, velvety seating in subtle colours. All floor corridors have subdued lighting that entices you to your room. Our room, which was a typical hotel room, overlooked the sea and was cleaned everyday with new towels provided. Tea and coffee not replenished every day which was a bit inconvenient but the staff were happy to bring more than enough to our room when asked. We were on a B&B basis and were not disappointed with the choice of buffet breakfasts on offer. Would suggest that this isn't a 5* but a very good 4*. Apart from that it was value for money. We also loved Madeira and would definitely go back again.

Room Tip: If you have a sea view or side view and are not in a suite, choose 5th floor upwards as it is more p...

Having worked on the island and stayed in another hotel close by we booked a weeks bed and breakfast stay in this hotel. I would really rate it 4.5 out of 5 my only issue being the pool it needed cleaning by a pool guy or one of them night robot ones you see in other hotel pools. Would I come here again YES no question, would I tell others to try it yes I would. It's not cheap but you pay what you pay and get what you get. All the staff fantastic couldn't be more friendly and helpful and I mean all of them, you can have a problem some times with pool beds but that's normal you either get in or take your chances, the usual problems occur selfish people who put towels on beds and turn up late afternoon? But all in all it was great will be going back for sure

Room Tip: Not sure we had a side room with a sea view and it was fine

I am currently staying at the Melia Madeira Hotel and can say that I am looking forward to going home for a good nights sleep. Believe it or not this hotel switches off the Aircon at 2.30am in the morning and restarts it at 6'30am...Apparently this is a Eco act ... more like saving money to me. If you are ok with 4 hours sleep or you have a very cheap deal then this hotel is for you... but if like me you do not want to wake up in a sweat at 2.30 and then Freezing at 6,30 and requireing your bedding changed each day then choose another hotel.

I did ask if the Aircon could be left on but NO it is the hotels policy to switch off...... Good Luck

Thank you for your brief review regarding your stay with us at Meliá Madeira Mare.

As explained during your stay and part of our sustainability policy initiatives, the air-con is de-activated during the night only during determined times, however the fan is automatically activated thereafter - and we're sorry that you were not unable to sleep and had a less than enjoyable stay as a result thereof.
We would like to make mention that we do take each and every guest/s comments very seriously and same has been taken up internally with a view to re-viewing the respective times programmed.
Aside from this, we hope you enjoyed your stay and do hope this has not deterred you from returning to our lovely island and to Meliá Madeira Mare.
With kind regards and best wishes

I stayed at this hotel at the end of May. I travelled with my husband, 5 year old son and my mother and father. So a mixed age group.

We both had really nice rooms. Our room was at the front of the hotel overlooking the pool and sea. It was very spacious for the three of us. We had breakfast included, which was very nice, and plenty of variety for us all. We did have the buffet meal one evening during our stay which again was very nice with a good choice of food for us all. All the staff we very kind and helpful and they all spoke very good English. They were all very kind to my son. They could not do enough for him.

The outdoor pool area was very nice with lots of sun loungers to go around. It was very quiet and relaxing. We also used the indoor pool area quite a lot as the outdoor pool was a little too cold for my son. The indoor pool was like a bath! I used the spa one afternoon which was very nice. Once you have had your massage you can use the Jacuzzis, steam room, sauna and hydrotherapy pools which was very relaxing.

There are plenty of restaurants near to the hotel. We used one which is directly opposite the hotel, I cannot think of its name! It is opposite the hotel and right next to the supermarket on the right hand side with while chairs. We had lunch in there a couple of time and we could not fault it. It was also very reasonably priced as well. The best meal we had was on the last night in Tokos restaurant. It is like eating in the chef’s front room! It is very small with only about 8 tables, the chef is very eccentric and comes to your table to talk about what you want to eat! The staff and chef could not have made us all feel more welcome, especially my son! You must go there.
One evening we went to Reid’s Palace for a dink which was a lovely experience. The view from the Cocktail Bar is amazing! The drink prices were amazing price too! €9 for a small glass of wine and €15 for a cocktail, but well worth the price!
One place to avoid is Nan’s Restaurant (you can see it from the hotel) it was the worst meal we had in 5 nights!

We found the Yellow Bus Tour very useful. The bus stop is just below the hotel and you can hop on and off the bus all around Funchal. We found this especially useful traveling with a 5 year old!

Funchal is a lovely place, definitely aimed at the more mature market / couple market. We travelled in the May half term and there were hardly any children there at all. So if you are looking for somewhere to go, where there are very few children (even in the school holidays) then Madeira is the place for you.

Having said that, if you do decided to travel with children they are made to feel extremely welcome. Wherever we went, especially in restaurants my son was made a fuss of and was very well looked after!

All in all we all really enjoyed the Melia Maderia Mare Resort and Spa and Funchal.

Thank you kindly for your detailed and positive comments shared on Tripadvisor !.

We're happy to hear you and your family enjoyed your stay with us!..

You're right there are many restaurants nearby - we're located in the heart of the tourism zone of Funchal (Lido area) and thus within walking distance to many recreational facilities.

The sightseeing bus is indeed a great way to start off and get around Funchal and the yellow bus stops, as you say, conveniently just outside our hotel premises !.

Do hope to welcome you and your family sometime in the not too distant future!

Kind regards and best wishes

Returned to this hotel for a second year and we were not disappointed. The staff were very friendly and efficient and could not help you enough. Special mention must go to Carla and Fatima who served us at breakfast. The buffet breakfast was something to behold for choice and quality. The rooms were spotless and spacious and well equipped and ours had a great view over the ocean.Hopefully we will be back again before too long.

Room Tip: High rooms have great views over the ocean

The hotel is in a great location in a nice tourist suburb of Funchal. Funchal is 20 minutes walk, which is mostly along the water and fairly flat, although there is one steep hill. The hotel breakfast is very good with a wide variety of food. We stayed b&b so didn't eat the lunchtime buffet, but the pool bar menu was very good and quite cheap. The staff are extremely friendly and very helpful. My wife needed to see a doctor while we were over and they were very helpful and even booked the appointment for us. I would definitely recommend the levada walks in the mountains. Also, if a taxi driver in Funchal suggests driving to the botanical gardens instead of using the cable car you would be foolish to accept. The cable car ride is fantastic and a quick way of getting up the mountains from the coast line of Funchal. Generally fantastic place to stay, very relaxing. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
