A bit tricky to find, but worth it. Music was provided by a guitarist playing a range of music from classical to contemporary. Service was attentive; the food was good and the value (37 euros including wines) was excellent.

My wife and I prebooked for our wedding anniversary meal on 9th April 2013, based on trip advisor good reviews. We were not disappointed.
The food was great as was the service and atmosphere. It was so good we went back again but as it was Sunday they were closed. As to the other negative comment by the person staying at Reids, you can't please all the people all of the time!
Thanks to all the staff at the Armazem, we had a very pleasant and memorable 30th anniversary meal. Oh and by the way, we are 49 and also used to eating well!

When you're on holiday you have to be somewhat led by the charts, so a visit to this place seemed a sure enough bet during the week. Our first impression was that the menu was a bit schizophrenic. The combination of ingredients and presentation are odd to say the least. The amuse-bouche was a pork terrine served at room temperature. Possiblygoing to make someone ill. The red pepper reduction could have been ketchup. My wife ordered the sardine starter and what was put in front of her was three smelly sardine fillets balanced on three slightly undercooked potatoes. I had salmon and cream cheese which was passable. My wife had pork loin for main course, served with a bizarre sweet potato mash mixed with olive. Selection of Vegetables was perfectly cooked, which was a plus point. I had strip sirloin which was ok.

In all, meh. I can't see how this is so popular unless (and I kind of suspect this) that this is one of those places where people who don't know much about good food go and imagine they are eating good food. Sorry guys.

Clearly popular with Brits, the only people who came in were British and of a certain age. It helps if you know who is writing these reviews as what is good for a student is rubbish for a retired solicitor etc. so I am 35 yrs, well used to eating out and eating well in London and south east, staying at Reids palace in Madeira.

Dear TripAdvisor Member,

Thank you for your comments and feedback. I am sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations on this occasion. However and despite respecting your comments which are very important to us, we must admit that we consider a bit strange how you can sum up our clients based on one visit only, including their knowledge about food. I must add that we have visitors from all over the world, including locals of course and everyone is more than welcome at Armazém do Sal.
Rest assured that we will address the issues mentioned. We would love to see you return on your next visit to idyllic Madeira and we will make sure that your next visit is worthy of our hard-earned reputation.

Best regards,

The Manager at Armazém do Sal

excellent evening. Good food, pleasing atmosphere, although a little dark. Seems to be very popular as restaurnt full at 8pm. hope it lives up to expectation in the summer when dining inside can be warm

I went to that restaurant for a Christmas diner last year with my fiance and another couple. Beautiful restaurant deco - old salt storage I think. Food was limited to a typical Portuguese Christmas diner but full of flavor and very elegant. Different wine with each course was top notch. Entertainment was great - guitarist and a lady singer (beautiful voice) established nice romantic atmosphere.Service was very good and extremely helpful - as a smoker I asked a waiter for a nearest shop to buy a cigarettes - he said that it is quite long walk but after a minute or two he came back with 4 cigarettes of his own and refused to take any money for that!!! Class...
Overall it was a great experience and this restaurant has that special charm which leave you with a very good memories.

Definitely worth a visit.
