“Great Restaurant”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

My wife and I found this restaurant quite by accident whilst strolling around Funchal, it is situated on a small cobbled street so could be considered quite hard to find. The 27 Euros fixed price menu is excellent value as it includes an aperitif. amuse bouche, starter, main course, dessert and coffee. The menu has a varied choice of dishes and the restaurant has an extensive wine list.
The atmosphere and decor in the restaurant is good and the service is friendly and with just about the right amount attention. The food itself was excellent, my filet mignon was cooked exactly as ordered and very well presented. the portions were perfectly adequete (we both have healthy appetites). We enjoyed our meal here so much that we made a reservation to dine here again on our last evening in madeira as we felt that this was the best restaurant we had eaten in in during our stay in Madeira.

“Excellent”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

Having been on several occasion the restaurant goes from strength to strength with an interesting menu of freshly prepared delights.
The service is second to none as is the choice of wines that accompany the set menu, which represents good value for the quality experienced.

“Could have been better.”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

I booked this restaurant for the first meal of our holiday in Funchal on the basis of tripadvisor reviews. As we entered I was complimented on my choice, it is indeed a very impressive location.

The service was average, the food quite good and well presented. Wine is okay but fairly expensive. Perhaps it was because it was a Monday, which I admit is never a good day to eat out. They are recovering from the weekend rush and it’s probably chef’s day off. There was just something lacking in our experience of this restaurant and I’m having difficulty in putting my finger on exactly what it was. I think my son in law summed up the situation at the end of our holiday when he said, “ all the meals we had in Funchal’s restaurants were good, but the first one was least good”.

We would all certainly go again but later in the week when there are more customers dining and the atmosphere hopefully more vibrant.

Some people seem to have difficulty in locating this restaurant but it is really fairly easy. It is in Rua da Alfandega which is the first narrow street running parallel with the sea front in Funchal centre. Walking from the Palcio de Sao Lourenco end in the direction of the Old Town You pass through a couple of small squares/street junctions. The restaurant is on your left, keep an eye out for the restaurant logo, a black on white knights head above the entrance passage.

Dear Guest,

There is nothing wrong about having high expectations about something, but unfortunately we must face the fact that Armazem do Sal didn't meet yours.
First of all, thank you for letting us know your thoughts about your visit and also for sharing our location details for all of those who may have trouble finding us in Funchal.
Being reviewed on a monthly basis, our wine selection always tries to unite the concepts of good quality-price ratio, coupled with the variety and attention to the temperatures of service, without neglecting a compact but thoughtfull choice of wines by the glass.
We would love to welcome you again in a near future and make you “crave” for more, so please allow us to present another perspective of Armazem do Sal.

With our kindest regards,

“Much better than Forte or Mozart”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

We are regular visitors to Funchal and always have at least 2 nights at Armazem.
We also visit the Forte and Mozart but are in no doubt that Armazem is far superior in the quality of the food and wine.
The choice on the menu is more varied and the quality of the meat and fish is excellent. There is an excellent selection of wine and the wine waiter has such a good knowledge of Portuguese wines.
The whole atmosphere is very special and there is lots of space between the tables. the service is very personal and friendly with just the right balance.
We have no doubts that this is the Number 1 restaurant in Funchal! It is a must visit and we can't wait to be back in January.
