If you read all my reviews of Funchal restaurants you may begin to wonder if it is possible to eat well at reasonable prices. Cliff Bay is Michelin starred and Villa Cipriani excellent but you will pay heavily for the privilege of eating at these establishments. Get along to the “Amazing” (as my wife calls it) before either they change the chef or put the prices up. For the cover charge you get excellent fresh bread, herb butter, pesto and cheese. The starters are very tasty and I can particularly recommend the sardines – herb encrusted fillets on a potato base. Of the main courses, all of the following were excellent - tenderloin of pork on orange sweet potato, tuna on risotto with capers, lamb chops, Iberian Bass. The panacotta dessert is to die for and wines are both cheap, well chosen and several are available by the glass (handy if you are eating meat and your partner fish). We were so impressed by our first visit we promptly rebooked. On our second visit a large group turned up delaying our desert. For this we got profuse apologies and complementary drinks. Excellent service, first class food, modest prices. Help! Surely this cannot be Funchal!
