If you read all my reviews of Funchal restaurants you may begin to wonder if it is possible to eat well at reasonable prices. Cliff Bay is Michelin starred and Villa Cipriani excellent but you will pay heavily for the privilege of eating at these establishments. Get along to the “Amazing” (as my wife calls it) before either they change the chef or put the prices up. For the cover charge you get excellent fresh bread, herb butter, pesto and cheese. The starters are very tasty and I can particularly recommend the sardines – herb encrusted fillets on a potato base. Of the main courses, all of the following were excellent - tenderloin of pork on orange sweet potato, tuna on risotto with capers, lamb chops, Iberian Bass. The panacotta dessert is to die for and wines are both cheap, well chosen and several are available by the glass (handy if you are eating meat and your partner fish). We were so impressed by our first visit we promptly rebooked. On our second visit a large group turned up delaying our desert. For this we got profuse apologies and complementary drinks. Excellent service, first class food, modest prices. Help! Surely this cannot be Funchal!

Took 10 minutes wandering up and down different ends of the same street and plenty in between but spotted the sigh eventually. Believed they stayed open late so put a reservation in for an hour later so we could go and grab a drink elsewhere. Arrived for our 2130 to find it worryingly quiet. Should have probably gone for 2100 at the latest (it was a Tuesday). Didn't seem to be a problem with the staff though as the service was generally excellent, apart from some waiting around for menus at the outset, and to place a dessert order.

Food was very good as was the wine. Setting is very nice too, which we already knew so didn't opt for an outdoor table in the alleyway.

This restaurant is down an alley, so not the most attractive setting, but the food is very well cooked and presented.
We have dined here many times and would do so again, although I have to say that this year, the service was not so good (we had to ask to order drinks) and there was live music being played which actually stopped us talking. The night was also a particularly warm one, and everybody was 'melting' - there did not appear to be any air conditioning.
That said they did make a super effort with my son's birthday pudding and gave us all a glass of sparkling wine - thank you once more.
See you next year.

Tried fair number of restaurants in Funchal on our last trip and this was the best. Well cooked, served and varied menu - combination of local dishes and wide cuisine. Waiters very knowloedgeable and you can confidently follow their recommendations. Nice ambience ( good quality live music on some nights). Good value for money.

This restaurant is in Rua da Alfandega. If you get to the end with all the embroidery shops, simply turn round and walk in the other direction (ie to the East) for a couple hundred metres and it's on the left, with courtyard entrance.

We ate here a few days ago and really enjoyed the meal - everything was indeed excellent. You'll quickly get used to the subdued lighting, the staff are knowledgeable and the service was 1st class. I have to mention the pork loin dish that I had which was the best of its type that I have tasted. The organic wine is good and well priced. Of course there are cheaper restaurants in Funchal but this has a deserved reputation for excellence and is well worth the money.
