“Remains disappointing”

Funchal Tourist Office
Ranked #116 of 254 things to do in Madeira
Attraction details
Reviewed December 18, 2013

When we first visited Funchal many years ago it had a small and very simple tourist office with excellent staff. A few years back it was re-built into a very unattractive and uninviting building with the 'shop-front' plastered with pictures obscuring what it offers; you could easily miss it. Unlike many tourist offices around the world it has few leaflets etc available to pickup or browse. The staff are very helpful despite this. If you know what you want to do then fine and enquire there but if you want to find out the range of attractions available in Funchal and Madeira then you may be disappointed. Sadly Madeira isn't good at presenting the full range of things it has to offer; it's a wonderful island. We keep discovering museums in Funchal purely by accident.

In our recent visit to the city of Funchal, in the second extended weekend of May 2013, when we stayed at the Royal Savoy Hotel, our intention was first and foremost to attend the already well-known Madeira’s Flower Festival (co-organised by the Madeira/Funchal Tourism Office, so we’ve been told). For those who are fond of flowers this is an enchanting experience. Two events stand out amongst others. On Saturday morning, in one of the Funchal plazas, a large number of children, accompanied by their parents, contribute to build, with flowers, the so-called Wall of Hope, whilst others are singing, as choirs, different cheerful songs. It is indeed wonderful and touching to see all that childhood doing that while hearing them singing. The second one is the Flower Parade that takes place on Sunday afternoon. An amazing number of young people, from children to teenagers and even to young women and men, parade close to the respective float (allegorical car), dressed in their attractive and imaginative fantasies, while joyfully singing and dancing. A prize will be awarded to the best group and respective float. But, there is more. A Flowers Exhibition as well as a Flowers Market where you can buy not only flowers (obviously) but also seeds, bulbs and corms. You may also see another curious thing along a quite large sidewalk: the so-called Street Carpets. These are made of flowers forming amazing patterns of shapes and colours and are done by organised groups of persons that take part in a contest. Beautiful! But Madeira is far from being solely its Flower Festival. Far from it indeed. Funchal, as well as all the Madeira island, is a beautiful and lovely place, offering a lot of tourist attractions (if you wish, you may get in touch with the Madeira Tourism Office, among other possibilities) . From East to West and from North to South, there exist a remarkable number of beautiful places, landscapes, towns and villages to visit. There are an also remarkable number of pleasant hotels and nice restaurants, almost always with diligent and courteous staff and personnel. Due to an excellent roads network it’s easy to travel to all those places. Personally, when we visit Madeira we like to rent a car which allow us to travel across the island at our own convenience. Concluding our review, we would like to say that, in our opinion, Madeira knows how to welcome its visitors. We feel good in Madeira. That’s why we don’t hesitate in recommending a visit to this lovely island. And if you are fond of flowers then do it when the Flower Festival takes place, usually in May.
