Very glad we made the visit. Getting there early in the morning meant we missed the overcrowding we had been told about which gave us the opportunity to appreciate the architectural simplicity of the structures.

“Santana”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2013

The thatched houses are very picturesque , but totally overcrowded with tour bus tourists. The couple of restored houses are a nightmare with far too many tourists overrunning the properties - you will be lucky to get a photo without some stranger mugging in your viewfinder. The surrounding gardens are very pretty. You can also visit a neat farmers' market across the way for fresh veggies and fruit. And If you want to avoid the crowds I suggest early morning and late pm trips. The house/shops also sell souvenirs.

“Taxi driver Manuel drove us here from Funchal w/ descriptions & charm.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2013

Very old houses with gardens. Quaint rooms, friendly families who spoke to us. Wonderful cable car ride to ocean with waterfalls to the right & massive ocean waves to our left. Beautiful coast. Excellent views & food. Madeira Taxi driver Manuel Gomes (917 846 425) was a godsend who took us everywhere to show not only tourist musts but local vistas. He introduced us to families who were warm & gracious. He took us to restaurants with fantastic food & service for reasonable prices.

“Tourist attraction worth a visit on a nice day to make the most of it.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2013

The town itself is pretty average and the houses are set up for tourists where you can buy souvenirs. If they were to be set up as traditional houses it may have been more interesting. There was a small farmers market where we did buy some nice sweet potato bread, but it was too wet and windy to go and find out more about what goes on here.......go on a nice day and you can tell me what I missed!!!

“the best bit is the little cable car”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

we got the bus from Funchal to santana, which was easy to do. We went on a wednesday and walked from the bus stop to the cable car that goes down to the farmers fields by the sea. I thuink this may only run on wednesdays. At the bottom of the cable car there is a walk along the pebble/rock beach, watch out for the massive waves...not sure you could do it at high tide, they really crash on the rocks and stones. Then you can walk to a little, one room, unintelligable, 'Biocentre'...next to this they have a small cafe which sells coffee and home made cider and other drinks, which you can drink in the garden there. You can do a bit more walking. looking at homes and fields, but after the very delicious cider we went back up in the cable car, which we shared with a farmer. It cost seven euros return. On the walk back up to the bus stop and centre we saw women working on their fields, some traditional houses, and went in a supermarket that had an absurd amount of salted cod to choose from! Prices here seemed to be less than Funchal. We saw a bit of the more touristy side of Sanatana, including some houses restored as tourist shops, which we found a bit tacky, but we missed the outdoor museum/theme park thing because we spent so long on the beach and walking. We felt Santana was a nice place, peaceful, and friendly. Especially if you go to look around rather than diving into the touristy elements. And as with all bus rides in Madiera the bus ride was excellent and interesting. If you wanted to you could walk down the cliff to the sea, there's a couple of awesome waterfalls you can see from a distance whichever way you go down, but we much preferred the cable car. The rocky beach and walk are totally unsuitable for buggies, and you do need to be steady on your feet.
