Owner description: Not very far from the historic centre of Sintra is one of the most beautiful architectural and landscape Romantic creations in Portugal: the Park and Palace of Monserrate, unique representatives of 19th century eclecticism.

I enjoyed the palace and found the on-going reconstruction very interesting. It is small, but beautiful, however the gardens are a highlight. There are trees and plants from allover the world, and the layout of the gardens and mini waterfalls is superb. This is more intimate than Penha Palace, and I found it well worth doing.

The house itself is not too big but large enough to keep you busy for a half an hour or so. When we visited some rooms were not open due to repairs or renovations. Gardens are beautiful and a pleasure to wander through.

I almost didn't go to this palace and boy am I happy I went in the end!

From the train station in Sintra, take bus 435 (which is really a van and not a bus) and it will leave you at the gate. The entrance fee for Monserrate is included in the combined ticket for all of these palaces in Sintra and at 31,50 eur for all of them, I think it's very much worth it. Besides, the ticket is valid for 30 days so you can visit a few one day and return another day. Otherwise, you can pay the separate fee at the entrance.

You will be given a very good brochure with a map and info and guided to start your visit to the left of the entrance, which means you go through the park first. It was like being in an oasis, or a tropical forest with waterfalls and lakes and a variety of trees and flowers. Mind you, this was in January and it was absolutely lovely. I can only imagine it in the summer!

The palace is a gem! The intricate details on the walls, ceilings and floors, the beautiful windows and staircases... And it's not very big, which makes it exquisite, it's like a (very expensive) doll house or pavilion. It was peaceful, with fantastic views over the park and Sintra.

I wouldn't miss this for the world! Highly recommended!

Liked the palace, but suspect it would be overcrowded in the height of the season. For the more active we'd suggest walking around the grounds. Some beautiful and some spectacular views. Some of the walks are tasking.

Very beautiful palace. It feels good-quality hand-owner, who built a house for his family. Nothing more, but they all feel the comfort and prosperity. In a unique garden experience a oneness with nature and peace. There horrosho meditate. Place zamenchatelnoe.
