Its pink and white stucco facade is magical, like Alicein Wonderland. So good to see it being renovated, and as a modern art museum with changing displays too. Stand in the long hallway and admire the vista of archways and the tiled floor through to the gardens at the far end. Then meander around the glorious gardens, roses, japanese, frogs croaking in the lakes, visit the backyard cafe and sit in the lovely wisteria and shrubbed private garden with a cool drink and a snack, people-watching. Lovely way to spend a day.

Astonishing! Like a piece of cake. There is a beautiful garden, the great place for a picnic. In addition to the castle, there is Countess house, very nice house with wooden decorations

This is an amazing building - how the really ostentatious 1% lived in the 1800s. Worth visiting. Read up on the back story beforehand - the property had originally been built by a wicked young English writer named William Beckford.

After having visited Palácio Nacional da Pena, Castelo dos Mouros and Palácio Nacional de Sintra on previous visits to Sintra, our expectations were high. Monserrate did not disappoint us! This small palace has a lot to see, especially in the garden/park. The palace is both cute and eccentric in it's Moghul style.

If you have a whole day to spend in Sintra, you should buy the combined ticket to see more than one of the town's beautiful palaces. Note that in the park, there is at least two toilet facilities that are of significantly lower standard than the one in the palace.

This lovely family home belonging to Francis Cooke was charming. The Moorish style throughout was elegant and yet refined. The grandeur one would perhaps expect was not so apparent as care had been given to providing a summer residence for the family. The gardens were tranquil and the view over Sintra was lovely. A definite must to visit - go in the afternoon as it seemed to be less busy.
