“Beautiful accommodation in an amazing location”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

Cinco is the beautiful home of lovely English couple Carol and Stuart, who have been resident in Portugal for a number of years and have extensive knowledge of the area and Sintra in particular. We were warmly greeted on arrival by Carol and one of their two cats, Jack, who became a regular visitor to our door (encouraged by us I have to say). We were shown around our accommodation and given useful information about Sintra. You stay in the ground floor rooms (although access is via a few steps which may be an issue if you have severe mobility problems). You enter via a large kitchen traditionally decorated and containing a table and chairs and all mod cons including a washing machine. Off the kitchen is the spacious bathroom with a shower over the bath and the bedroom with plenty of storage and very comfortable beds. The lounge is at the far end with a double bed-settee if needed, flat screen television with English channels and doors opening on to the terrace and fantastic views over the surrounding countryside towards the sea. Carol and Stuart provide a wide range of breakfast provisions which lasted us all week apart from one of the cereals and the delicious home-made strawberry jam which she kindly replenished. There are books, DVDs and games in the lounge in case you are unlucky enough to experience bad weather. You are free to wander the beautiful gardens and there is an indoor swimming pool. The property is located in a delightful location, just a short walk from the historic centre but incredibly peaceful with only the odd cockerel breaking the silence. Parking is available right outside the property but is accessed by a narrow road so if you are hiring a car I would consider a small one (we had a Fiat Punto which was fine). Sintra is stunning with many interesting places to visit. We were attending a week-long event so did not get chance to visit them but a re-visit is very much on the cards. It does get very busy because of its beauty and I would recommend walking the lovely narrow cobbled streets before the tourists arrive in the morning and after they have left in the late afternoon. You are sure to lose a few pounds in weight as you wander up and down the hills enjoying all it has to offer! If you wish to go further afield during your visit the lovely west coast beaches, Cascais and Lisbon are easily accessible. Carol and Stuart are more than happy to help out with information and help with any issues that may arise. It would be hard to imagine a better choice of accommodation in Sintra, a real home-from-home. We have travelled widely and stayed in all sorts of accommodation but this really is up there with the best of them. Lastly, the owners are in the process of converting a small cottage below the main garden which I understand will be ready for the 2014 season. We saw the work in progress and think it will be a great alternative.

Cinco is a perfect location to enjoy all that Sintra has to offer which is a great deal.
The accommodation has all you could wish for, 2 minutes from Sintra centre with all its hustle and bustle but quiet, private and remote with amazing
views
Carol and Stuart are great hosts finding the balance between attending to all your needs and leaving you in peace. They go beyond the call of duty also to make your stay special.
Sintra has become a firm favourite with us and we wouldn't stay any where else

For those wanting an amazing view in a first class B&B you cant go wrong at Cinco. The accommodation is spacious, very clean and comfortable and we both were totally relaxed after a good nights sleep. Carole is a great host and a mind of information about what to see and where to go. Stuart & Carole have nearly finished the cottage below the house and we both have booked it for next year. It is going to be an amazing self contained cottage with it's own garden and is looking good already!
Carole picked us up and dropped us off at the airport and made sure we had plenty to eat during our 5 night stay! Many thanks to both of you for making our stay a totally relaxed and pleasant stay
Tony & Linda

Room Tip: Soon to be a cottage as well as staying in a self contained flat within the house both are excellent...

We were due to stay at Cinco last year but had to cancel due to illness. Carole was kind enough to let us transfer our deposit to this year so we knew right from the start that we were dealing with a very understanding and accommodating lady! Her helpfulness continued throughout our stay: a plate of figs when we were sitting in the garden, the offer of a lift to the beach, the suggestion that in view of our late flight back we keep the use of the apartment until we left at 5pm. All these personal touches differentiate Cinco from an anonymous hotel.

Carole was also a font of knowledge on what to visit and how to get there by bus and also had plenty of recommendations for where (and - equally important - where not) to eat.

We had just spent four nights in Cascais at a lovely but noisy hotel so we particularly enjoyed the tranquillity of Cinco. It was the perfect place to return to after a morning of sight-seeing and just relax. Carole provides comfy deck chairs and there is always a choice of sun or shade in which to curl up with a book; there is even a hammock for those who can't rouse themselves to make use of the pool or table tennis table!

We were fortunate enough to have almost non-stop sunshine and blue skies but, even if we had been less lucky, the lounge in the apartment was cosy and well equipped with books, games, dvds and UK TV channels.

The breakfast provisions provided by Carole were plentiful and eating out on the terrace each morning, enjoying the view and hearing nothing but the church bells was an enjoyable part of the holiday.

Don't be fooled into thinking you can do Sintra in a day trip from Lisbon. Not only is there far to much to see but Sintra itself can be packed with day-trippers during the day, so it is especially rewarding to wander through the little town after they have gone, looking up at the floodlit Moorish Castle, deciding where to eat and feeling that you have the place to yourself.

All in all our stay at Cinco was thoroughly enjoyable and we can well understand why Carole gets so many repeat bookings. The cottage which is currently being built in the grounds looks equally promising and will in no way detract from the sense of privacy enjoyed by the apartment.

This property is basically a fully furnished and equipped flat with homely (rather than modern/boutique hotel-y) decor. It was a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and lounge. The wifi worked, as did the UK TV channels. Carole was friendly and welcoming. Rather than being a B&B providing a breakfast, eggs, bread rolls, jam, orange juice etc was left in the fridge. I imagine it was be good for a couple staying a few nights - I feel my quick one night stay did not take advantage of the pool, garden and general scope for relaxing.

We spent a memorable week at Sintra. A day trip from Lisbon was recommended in the guide books, but we knew better! This "hill station" village only 3/4 hour by train from Lisbon is awash with palaces, castles, gardens, fascinating old buildings, gardens and natural landscapes. And Cinco was the perfect place to set out each day to explore these amazing UNESCO heritage sites. Previous reviews all reflect how we feel - a quiet. private, spacious lower floor with kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room, and an outdoor terrace all to ourselves. Breakfast makings were in the fridge, plus a welcoming bottle of wine, and fresh flowers. Extremely clean and all amenities you could want including oven/stove top/toaster/microwave/hairdryer/washing machine (which is great for travellers). Wifi internet worked well. And Carole and Stuart are not far away if you need advice or any assistance.Booking was smooth. Their pair of cats love visitors too. The garden, carefully tended, is available to roam in. It was quite warm during our stay so the pool was lovely to relax in at the end of a long day of walking. Cinco is perfectly situated, tucked away from the main touristy areas, but not too far - with only a couple of minutes walk to the centre of the old village. We walked from the station (with directions from the tourist office), but Carole kindly transferred us back there at the end of our stay. It is only minutes away from eateries. (Carole recommended Tulhas - we went twice - very good and reasonable), or you can meet Gabriele at the mini mercato, buy supplies and cook at home. Buy local specialty queijadas - little cheesie cakes - and bring them home to eat with coffee and wine on the terrace watching the sunset over the valley. A very special place to stay. Thankyou Carol and Stuart for your hospitality and sharing your delightful property. We'll be back.

We came back for the second time, 2 weeks in July, and it was just as lovely as last year. Carole and Stuart are exceptional hosts, all the little touches around the flat, little chocolates on top of the delicate bedclothes, fresh flowers in the bedroom, a bottle of wine and fresh fruit in the kitchen as well as lots of toys and books and dvds. Not to mention the delicious homemade strawberryjam.
It is just like your own little home away from home, except that here you have someone to take extra care of you.
And sitting in the garden and on the patio in the mornings and evenings is so tranquil and peaceful that you feel you could stay forever.
Its difficult to find words to describe this perfect little paradice and I am already looking forward to be able to go back.
