Cinco is the beautiful home of lovely English couple Carol and Stuart, who have been resident in Portugal for a number of years and have extensive knowledge of the area and Sintra in particular. We were warmly greeted on arrival by Carol and one of their two cats, Jack, who became a regular visitor to our door (encouraged by us I have to say). We were shown around our accommodation and given useful information about Sintra. You stay in the ground floor rooms (although access is via a few steps which may be an issue if you have severe mobility problems). You enter via a large kitchen traditionally decorated and containing a table and chairs and all mod cons including a washing machine. Off the kitchen is the spacious bathroom with a shower over the bath and the bedroom with plenty of storage and very comfortable beds. The lounge is at the far end with a double bed-settee if needed, flat screen television with English channels and doors opening on to the terrace and fantastic views over the surrounding countryside towards the sea. Carol and Stuart provide a wide range of breakfast provisions which lasted us all week apart from one of the cereals and the delicious home-made strawberry jam which she kindly replenished. There are books, DVDs and games in the lounge in case you are unlucky enough to experience bad weather. You are free to wander the beautiful gardens and there is an indoor swimming pool. The property is located in a delightful location, just a short walk from the historic centre but incredibly peaceful with only the odd cockerel breaking the silence. Parking is available right outside the property but is accessed by a narrow road so if you are hiring a car I would consider a small one (we had a Fiat Punto which was fine). Sintra is stunning with many interesting places to visit. We were attending a week-long event so did not get chance to visit them but a re-visit is very much on the cards. It does get very busy because of its beauty and I would recommend walking the lovely narrow cobbled streets before the tourists arrive in the morning and after they have left in the late afternoon. You are sure to lose a few pounds in weight as you wander up and down the hills enjoying all it has to offer! If you wish to go further afield during your visit the lovely west coast beaches, Cascais and Lisbon are easily accessible. Carol and Stuart are more than happy to help out with information and help with any issues that may arise. It would be hard to imagine a better choice of accommodation in Sintra, a real home-from-home. We have travelled widely and stayed in all sorts of accommodation but this really is up there with the best of them. Lastly, the owners are in the process of converting a small cottage below the main garden which I understand will be ready for the 2014 season. We saw the work in progress and think it will be a great alternative.
