This was a real gem and it's easy to see why it is booked up so early in advance. We had arranged for Carol (the owner) to meet us at the airport, which was a 30 minute journey to Sintra. On arrival, winding up and down the narrow roads, we arrived at Cinco. Behind the gated entrance, was Carol's home and our apartment where we would stay the next 7 nights. After taking in the surroundings, you noticed the fragrance of the garden and the fantastic views over Sintra. Our apartment was lovely, home from home with everything you need. In the fridge were eggs, jam, yogurts, along with bread, croissants and fresh fruit. There were little touches like a bottle of wine and fresh flowers.
Carol and Stuart, not forgetting Jack to cat, really made us feel welcome. There was so much thought, a hot water bottle put into the bed at night, the heaters switched on and offer to take us to the supermarket as she was going. This made the holiday really special and relaxing. We would certainly return, as there's so much still see and do.
This is a wonderful place to visit, plenty to see and do. Easy to get to with direct trains from Lisbon, around 50 minuites or 30 in taxi. There are regular buses from Sintra to the main Palaces, cost around 4 euro return. Most are nearby, some only a 5 minuite walk but are up hill so it's may be wise to catch the bus!
There are many restaurants in the Historic part of Sintra where you can get a quick snack or an evening meal. Tulahs restaurant offers traditional Portuguese food and a good price. Most restaurants will bring out breads, hams, cheese and olives whilst you are looking at the menu. You will have to pay for anything you eat, this is explained in some restaurants, the cost should be on the menu. Just remember it's not free and will add a bit onto your bill.
To see and do
Sintra itself has a lot to see, with it's palaces, parks and gardens. If you want to see a bit more of Portugal, there are buses to nearby villages and beaches or catch the train to Lisbon. If you are short of time, a must is Quinta De Regalia with it's fantastic gardens, underground tunnels and wells. Penna Palace, with it's colourful building and beautiful gardens.
