Cinco

This was a real gem and it's easy to see why it is booked up so early in advance. We had arranged for Carol (the owner) to meet us at the airport, which was a 30 minute journey to Sintra. On arrival, winding up and down the narrow roads, we arrived at Cinco. Behind the gated entrance, was Carol's home and our apartment where we would stay the next 7 nights. After taking in the surroundings, you noticed the fragrance of the garden and the fantastic views over Sintra. Our apartment was lovely, home from home with everything you need. In the fridge were eggs, jam, yogurts, along with bread, croissants and fresh fruit. There were little touches like a bottle of wine and fresh flowers.

Carol and Stuart, not forgetting Jack to cat, really made us feel welcome. There was so much thought, a hot water bottle put into the bed at night, the heaters switched on and offer to take us to the supermarket as she was going. This made the holiday really special and relaxing. We would certainly return, as there's so much still see and do.

Getting around

This is a wonderful place to visit, plenty to see and do. Easy to get to with direct trains from Lisbon, around 50 minuites or 30 in taxi. There are regular buses from Sintra to the main Palaces, cost around 4 euro return. Most are nearby, some only a 5 minuite walk but are up hill so it's may be wise to catch the bus!

Eating Out
There are many restaurants in the Historic part of Sintra where you can get a quick snack or an evening meal. Tulahs restaurant offers traditional Portuguese food and a good price. Most restaurants will bring out breads, hams, cheese and olives whilst you are looking at the menu. You will have to pay for anything you eat, this is explained in some restaurants, the cost should be on the menu. Just remember it's not free and will add a bit onto your bill.

To see and do

Sintra itself has a lot to see, with it's palaces, parks and gardens. If you want to see a bit more of Portugal, there are buses to nearby villages and beaches or catch the train to Lisbon. If you are short of time, a must is Quinta De Regalia with it's fantastic gardens, underground tunnels and wells. Penna Palace, with it's colourful building and beautiful gardens.

Although agreeing with most of the positive comments in earlier reviews I must say that there was no “generosity of breakfast goodies”, the refrigerator being far from “well stocked”. Fruit was supplied, but replenished with only one banana during our five day stay. There was milk, not very exciting bread, a half-used jar of jam, coffee, a carton of fruit juice, a choice of two very sugary cereals, yoghurt and rather less than one egg per day for each of us: none of the meats, cheese, tomatoes etc. that had been provided elsewhere in Portugal.

By the time we arrived in Sintra - later in the day than expected due to a one-day rail strike - we had been traveling for a week, staying at three different places in two countries in that time. Cinco instantly felt like home, and we knew from the moment Carole greeted us at the gate that we wished we could stay longer than our two nights! The apartment was perfect, and instantly felt like home. The short walk into the center of Sintra and beyond was made many times. We didn't have a car, and we didn't need one. When we toured some of the local castles and palaces on Thanksgiving Day, we used the circular tour bus. We loved Carole's restaurant recommendations, and really felt like we got a good feel for lovely Sintra in the short time we were there. We didn't meet Stuart until our departure day, when he popped in to offer us a ride to the airport for a very reasonable price, rather than calling a cab for us. He was so friendly and chatty we wished we had met him sooner! It would have been fun to share a cup of tea or a cocktail with our hosts, had time allowed. If we ever get back to that area, we will check Cinco B&B first!

We could not have chosen a better place than Cinco. Carole and Stuart were warm and helpful and made us feel instantly at home in their lovely spot with fresh flowers, well stocked refrigerator for great breakfasts and a lovely view. The B&B is situated so that we walked everywhere and never moved the car for 4 days. Sintra is truly a magical spot in Portugal and we plan to return with our granddaughters to again see the forts, castles and views of incomparable charm.

Thank you, Cinco. We will see you again.

It has all be said before - Cinco is a true home away from home. Sintra is a magical town. Booking 3 nights, travel day and one day into Lisbon meant we didn't scratch the surface of Sintra. We needed a few more day to see all Sintra has to offer...at the same time you want to savor your private apartment at Cinco. Carole is a angel. I would highly recommend this B&B, but you might want to book early to secure your dates.

We chose Cinco based on the high reviews on TripAvdivsor. It lived up to all the positive comments. The innkeepers are charming and their home is in a spectacular setting, yet close to the historic sites of Sintra. Bedroom is small, but there is a sitting room and kitchen. I wish we could have stayed longer.

Innkeeper Carole meets you at the gate and makes you very comfortable. Guests have an apartment with a fabulous view. Because there's only one unit, it fills quickly; reserve early. Apartment is very comfortable and in a great location to access all the sites.
