... If you have basic knowledge of esoteric culture (Mystery Cults, Secret Societies, "Gnosis"/Re-birth/Enlightenment etc.) and happen to be in the area, do not miss this sight!!.... For everyone else this is a great place to spend an afternoon.... Well maintained/manicured gardens filled w/nooks, crannies, statues pathways to mysterious towers, tunnels, elaborate benches, caves (make sure to bring a light source to explore these), an initiation well and even a spot where you can literally "walk on water"!!...

With Sintra proper behind you (with your back to the "Moors' Castle") head to the main road (as if you're going to the Sintra Palace) and generally head to the left. Then look for signs to the right of the colorful church, and in about 10 min. you'll reach the main gate.... Ask anyone and they'll point you to it, it's really easy to get to.

The main house is also a must see, and while there, make sure you follow the narrow steps to the roof top, where you'll get some great shots of the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace (see review on those). Small cafe located in it's courtyard is an awesome place to end the very exploratory afternoon.... Needless to say, there's lots of walking involved, so bring comfortable shoes!!... Also by the house is a little chapel (also full of esoteric meaning), not to be missed!!... Lots of photo ops, everywhere!

My only complaint was a lack of restroom facilities (only one set of restrooms by the main house AFA I know)... Other than that, no complaints.

Hope this helps!! KS

Regaleira is a Masterpiece, just like a fairy-tale, absolutely stunning!
Going to Sintra and not visit Regaleira, is a sin !

Absolutely stunning architecture, neo-manueline style, with amazing underground tunnels with many many masonry symbols. On top of the gardens, there's the fantastic Initiatic well, which, is just like an inverted tower, divided in nine platforms which give us the sensation of a route leading down to the Earth...

Worth a visit if not raining, otherwise you will miss the best part of it.

What a great Site. Beautiful grounds and buildings dominate this attraction. The underground tunnels were so much fun. Don't miss this site which is an easy walk from the tourist office.

I've visited palaces and gardens around the world and this one is near the top of the list! The location in the quaint town of Sintra is reason enough to visit, but the unique topography and history of the grounds keeps you exploring. I spent at least 3 hours going up and down, back and forth uncovering new views along each turn!

We went early in the morning, just as they had opened, and had the place almost to ourselves. It was simply magical, with the fog hanging low, exploring the gardens with all its ponds, fountains and tunnels.
