“Absolute Fairy Tale”

From the moment we arrived at the two lane highway in Sintra to walking through the front door into the courtyard of Quinta de Sao Thiago we felt as though we were in a land that time had forgotten. This wonderful, warm, home is made even better by the famiy that runs it. We arrived late on a cool November afternoon and were offered tea and cake - our room had a lovely view of the grounds and at night we could see the glowing towers of the Palace at Montserrat. Our complimentary breakfast was served in a fabulous dining room at a long wooden table, making my fiance and I feel like Sir Lancelot and Guinevere. We highly recommend these accommodations for those who appreciate the 'old world' and the comfort of a magical family home. Not only were we given ideas and directions on visiting the many palaces and castles in the area, but also were made to feel incredibly comfortable in this mystical place.

We stayed at the Quinta as part of a tour of northern Portugal. I liked the Quinta - the grounds and the pool are lovely - but have some reservations about the property.
The road to the Quinta is down a very steep dirt track and could be dangerous at night. The property is quite isolated and not convenient for getting an evening meal if you don't want to drive.
I also feel that the standard of the accommodation is not worth 100 euros a night. We paid for a 'superior 'room but don't feel that the accommodation could be defined as that. The 4 star hotel which we had just come from charged 90 euros a night and the facilities were far superior to the Quinta. If the charge was around 50-60 euros a night I think that would be a more reasonable rate for the standard of the accommodation.
Overall, I felt quite disappointed as far as value for money was concerned.

We stayed there for five nights in early June 2009.

Firstly we took a 10 Euro taxi ride along a dangerous road and down a dirt track to this so called ‘Hotel’.
On arrival we were met by a girl who was friendly and said that they preferred to consider their guests as friends. When we walked into the house we went into a room with a dog and various cats wandering around. It was then that the girl said, “Oh. I hope you don’t have any issues with animals” Funny enough, my partner has an allergy to cats and this was the first time we were made aware that there would be cats sitting outside your bedroom door!

This place is NOT a hotel or guest house! Be aware!

For the following reasons I would never stay there again and do not recommend it to avoid disappointment.

It is simply someone’s house, not a hotel or guest house.
The place has no modern standards. The electrics are old fashioned and in my opinion, this place has not been tested for safety standards .
There is no reception, bell or phone. If you need something, good luck. I wanted a bottle of wine and an ironing board so I asked the owners son who was watching TV(He was the only person around). He said, “I’m watching the tennis, I’ll get it for you when it’s over” So the guest waited while the host finished watching the tennis. The ironing board never arrived.
The place is out in the country side which is nice but taxis are your only option and some won’t go down the dirt track to the house as it puts their vehicles at risk.
We asked if there was anywhere nearby for dinner that we could walk to. The girl recommended a restaurant. She sent us down a track where we ended up in bushes as high as our chests, through a field and into a little housing area where we got attacked by five dogs. We were not in the mood for food after that and had to wait on a bus to take us to Sintra from the main road.
If you order a taxi from the house, the meter starts from where the driver is coming from.
They seem to know nothing about the area. We said to them on our way out one day that we were going to catch the old tram to the beach. They said, “That’s nice” but failed to tell us that the tram only operated from July. When you deal with tourists, you should know these things. Shouldn’t you?
The piano playing is not for your pleasure. It starts at 9am every day and goes on for hours. If you want to sleep in for a while, forget it. You will be wide awake to the sound of Chopin or something every morning, like it or not. Maybe in the evening with a meal and a glass of wine but good luck if you want those things.
The furniture was shabby and the bed was really uncomfortable. The room had no facilities for guests.

To round off, that place could have ruined my first ever trip to Portugal. We made the most of it and I highly recommend Sintra. It is really beautiful. The Quinta Seo Thiago seems to be a family’s big old house that they can’t afford to run anymore. We paid 100 Euros per night to stay there and it is not worth more than 50 a night. The only thing they have done to turn their house into a hotel is to place some leaflets about the area on a table. After staying there I do not feel like their friend.

We went into Lawrences Hotel for a drink and the service we got was simply amazing. Lawrences is in Sintra and at 105 Euro a night it would be much better to spend the extra 5 Euro. It looks lovely. What a shame we didn’t stay there.

A rare find, that's the only way to describe Quinta de Sao Thiago. Nestled on the side of the high, well treed hills of Sintra, near the end of a narrow, seldom traveled country road you will find an elegant and stately manor. My wife and I along with two friends all from Calgary, Alberta enjoyed several days there this past fall and wish we had booked a longer visit. After you explore the neighbouring castles and palaces of Sintra, make sure you also take time to relax and stroll through this Quinta's many interesting rooms (including a secret passage through a bookcase) and pretty gardens. If you're looking for a place to get away from road noise, traffic and the madding crowd, and where a relaxing afternoon with a good book is the norm then I highly recommend a few days at Quinta de Sao Thiago.

Angela my wife and I stayed at this Family run house , in a quiet, forest setting with a great garden and pool, for 10 days, we were made very welcome as part of the family, and felt as though we were at home, It is right next door to the Gardens of Monseratte now receiving substantial funding from the EEC to reshape the lovely gardens of the Pena Palace which is also being restored. The food was first class and the evening meal if you are offerd one is a MUST, real home cooking. Maria Braddell the elder, is a fantastic musician, and will occaisionally play any classical piano music in the huge library room , mostly from memory, a really great experience, we found it by internet search .We would certainly go again.

We chose Quinta De Sao Thiago in Sintra, Portugal basically sight unseen and we couldn't have been happier with our find. It is a beautiful historic bed and breakfast with lovely grounds. The owners are wonderful people who were very helpful with sight seeing, shopping, car rentals and information about the area.
We had a lovely two room suite with private bath, which looked out over the gardens and up into the hills with a most wonderful view of Monserrat. We received tea at tea time and wine in the evening and were treated to a lovely piano concert in the library by the owner of the quinta. The breakfasts were substantial and tasty. I would book a return visit and also recommend this place to travelers.

Dear Family Braddell,

On the 20th of July 2007 we have left your beautiful Quinta to depart for another place in Portugal. Our holiday is finished now and we are
back in Holland. We will always remember Quinta de Sao Thiago as one of the most beautiful places we have visited during our holiday.
Especially the warmth of the hospitality of all of you was a very
nice experience. When we have the opportunity to come back to
Portugal and we are in the area of Sintra, we definitely will come
back and we will for sure recommend the Quinta to other people.
