“Lovely, homey, a real gem”
Reviewed April 10, 2007

My husband and I stayed here four nights in October for a walking holiday we booked through portugal walks and responsible travel. We had no idea where we would be staying and trusted in the company we booked through to ensure we got a good location and a good room.

Setting: Gorgeous. Sintra is a destination all its own, not just a stop on a trip to Lisbon. This particular hotel is not in the touristy center of Sintra, which I prefer (you can walk there very easily or take a very cheap cab if you are unable to walk). The hotel is surrounded by hills and other lovely homes. The grounds are gorgeous and lush, with a swimming pool for hotter days. It is quiet and peaceful.

Hosts: The family who runs this place is charming and so welcoming. In the evening they have a small bar in the breakfast room downstairs where you can drink and socialize, no need to go out and find someplace to drink after supper. They will also give recommendations on restaurants and breakfast is delicious.

The Hotel: This isn't exactly five star, baby, but it is exactly the sort of place I love. The rooms are spacious, the showers have good water pressure and hot water. The beds are big and comfy. The building itself is clean and well looked after and oozing with character. It isn't pretensious or stuffy, and it isn't falling apart or dirty. It is charming and comfortable and very olde world Portuguese. Lovely.

The area: At the foot of the Sao Pedro area of Sintra, you may think you are losing out be not being in the "centre" but trust me, you aren't. We tried some of the restaurants around the center and they were rubbish. Go out the front gate of the Pensao and go left, up the narrow road and the long staircase, to explore the Sao Pedro area. You'll find all the places the locals eat... Be sure to ask your hosts their favorite.

The language: Regarding the Portuguese and the Pensao, the hosts speak German, English, Spanish (I think) and Portuguese, naturally. But in the area, almost no one speaks anything but Portuguese. So bring along your phrase book! Don't worry... everyone there is SO friendly and happy to help!

Enjoy... we certainly did!

I can highly recommend a trip to this magical Pensao, it made our visit to Sintra the highlight of our Portugese holiday. The staff are so helpful and friendly, and really go out of their way to make sure that you have everything you need. The location is also great, it's outside the town and a pleasent walk through the forest to the old fort, and palace.

We originally had booked this hotel for 2 nights, but just couldnt leave, so we decided to stay with them for the rest of our Portugal trip ! Everything was just great, the big airy rooms with wooden floors and big bathtub (we had a non view room), the 30m (!) swimming pool in the green garden, so nice for a morning walk or the terrace orientated to the west, perfect for a sundowner and last but not least the very friendly personnel: all somehow conncected to the family business, absolutely stress-free and devoted to make your stay the best you will ever have (for this price). Moreover the hotel is located just a 5/minute walk through the park to the historical centre. Only too often we dream away over the pictures we have from it,.. " we want to go back, and we will"

A wonderful place to stay. My husband and I stayed her for three nights and had a great time. Staff (especially Anna) is unbelievably helpful. The rooms are large and clean, grounds and views are stunning and the pool is great if you just want to take a day to relax. The hotel is around a 10 minute walk from the centre. I would definitely stay here again.

A great place to stay with lots of caracter and a great pool!

It's an old building and it showes in places, there's no airco and if your neighbours are loud you will probably hear them through the thin doors or walls.

The reception is very friendly, you get a good explanation about where you are and what you can do. There's a safe parking space in front of the pensao.

The rooms are clean and have high ceilings, bigg doors/windows giving them lots of charm. It was very warm but our room was always cool enough. It cools down at night and there's always a good breeze in Sintra.
The bathroom had a bath and shower and was okay.

The garden is super! You can sit by the pool, listening to the wind in the trees, relax and when you've warmed up you can have a nice swim.

Sintra is a 15 minute walk. Here you have restaurants, musea and there's a great castle if you're up to the walk up the hill!

If you're looking for a relaxing place to stay, this is it!

Unbelievable - this is truly one of our favorite hotels of all time and about the best value for money that we've ever experienced. The pool and gardens are just incredible. The staff is kind and over-the-top helpful. One tip - some of the rooms have been refurbished while others have not. My parents paid an extra 10 euros for view (rate was then 85 euros) and had an incredible view PLUS super tasteful decor, fixtures, furnishings and cross-breeze windows. With our two kids, my family ended up in a slightly larger "family room" that felt much older and faded -and paid an extra 30 euros. The double with view that my parents had would have been fine for our needs (double bed+single bed+ room for crib). Anyway, other than that, we give this place our highest recommendation for either a family vacation or an adult getaway!

  • Liked — Pool and gardens
  • Disliked — some rooms were older and dated
  • Tips/Secrets — Make sure to ask for a renovated room - even if it costs a few euros more - it's worth it!

The rooms are huge with big high ceilings - really comfortable. Breakfasts are amazing. The list goes on....... This place is really worth staying in and is great value. I will be back.....
