gorgeous, varied gardens, woods, lakes, roses, bamboos, set on a hillside with the fairytale Monserrate palace at the rear. Lovely to visit.

It is the gardens that are the true attraction, but I found the remarkably narrow mansion (featuring a small-scale photo exhibition) unexpectedly intimate and strangely moving. The location is a bit far to reach by foot from Sintra, but there is a bus connection from the train station.

A ticket to Monserrate can be combined with one or more other attractions in Sintra, for a reduced overall fee (valid for several weeks). We also visited the National Palace, the Queluz Palace (this latter a bit further out), and the Pena Palace. We thoroughly enjoyed the National and the Queluz. The Pena has beautiful rooms, too, but the tourist overload spoils much of the pleasure, and the park is far less romantic than the Monserrate.

After seeing and learning about the historical timeline of the other locations in the Parks and Palaces of Sintra, this was just another wealthy persons home and botanical garden. It may appeal to many just not to me.

One of my 3 most favourite places in Sintra. It is a couple of kilometers away from the city but definetly worth a detour to see the charming morish inspired house and garden.

The park and wonderful gardens worth every moment of the visit and the Palace - recently refurbished - is lovely.
