Apeadeiro is a small local place near the railroad station in Sintra, near Lisbon, and caters to the locals. Our tourguide Alex at top ten tours suggested it when we told him we wanted some plain regular Portuguese food like ordinary people ate. We were tired and hungry after all the walking to see the sights in Sintra, with only some pastries to sustain us during the day. We had a place in mind we had researched, but decided to listen to him. Wow, were we fortunate that we did.
We took another couple with us and tasted everyone's food. We had a beefsteak in cream sauce, which was tender and perfectly cooked, Uglyfish (Monkfish) with rice, with a fresh lobster texture and taste of the fish, clams with Portuguese sausage, and garlic shrimp, both dishes were equally delicious. And the bread, olives and spread befor the mains was a real treat. Three of us shared a bottle of nice wine, while i had my usual diet coke.
This is a family run place that had been there for quite a few years. The decor is subdued and the service is really good. Mom cooks, dad runs the front and a daughter and an uncle serve the food. It was fairly busy, but the service was attentive, timely, and very friendly. They seemed to enjoy that we were having a great time, and even poured a comp glass of Port after our flan dessert.
The tab was quite reasonable and the food a refreshing change from the cruise ship food we had been eating for several weeks, except for some other shoreside meals.
I wrote a review of our Lisbon stop and this is the name of the place in Sintra I could not remember the name of, I finally found the business card from Apeadeiro
Would we return and eat here again? In a heartbeat!
Thanks Alex, we are glad we listened to your advice, it was the best local food we had on the cruise, and we ate at some other really fantastic places.
